Senior Football West Championship semi-final
Senior footballers advance to West Final

Newcastle West ..........0-9
Askeaton-Ballysteen...0-8

The Bog Garden was the venue on Saturday and Paddy Carroll refereed. Ground conditions were excellent and it was dry but bitterly cold. The game was of the modern kind, a lot of hand passing, movement off the ball, soloing and retaining possession, making huge demands on fitness. It doesn't set every person's pulses racing but it has its own many attractions. The teams were well matched and this was reflected in the half time score, 0-3 all. Our scores came from our current county senior panellists Jamie Lee 0-2 and Cian Sheehan 0-1. Jamie, 0-1, and Cian, 0-1, were again on target in the second half and it was Jamie's excellent point a minute into time added on that gave us the place in the final v Adare or St. Kieran's. The other scorers in this well contested half were Ian Corbett 0-[1, Thomas Quilligan 0-2 and Seán Browne, raiding from centre back 0-1. Overall in a game well contested which could have gone either way, our lads all working hard in the execution of their game plan, got to the winning post with their noses barely in front. It was enough. Well done to all and it's great to be in the final.
Team: John Joe Sheehy, Michael O'Keeffe, Darragh Woods, Michael Dowling, Michael O'Leary, Seán Browne, Gavin Riedy, Paul Hannon, Ian Corbett, Jamie Lee 0-3, Cian Sheehan 0-2, Donnacha Woods, Stephen Kelly, Shay Lyons, Thomas Quilligan 0-2. Subs: Shane Kelly, Mark Linehan, Michael Martin, Jason Dowling, Stephen Nix, Joey Healy, Eoin Hurley, Shane Kelly and Michael Quilligan. In the final we play the winners of the Adare v St. Kieran's semi-final. Training continues.

Senior football county league round 2
Newcastle West were to play Dromcollogher-Broadford yesterday at the Field.

Intermediate hurling county league round 2
Newcastle West ..........2-6
Kilmallock ................3-15
With little done in terms of training by most of the players and minus many of the players (A) who have backboned the team in the last decade, or (B) who would be expected to backbone the team for the rest of this decade, the lads in action gave it their best shot at the field on Sunday evening last where Seamus McNamara refereed in A1 conditions. Struggling with the pace and intensity of the game and with our skill set on the rusty side we were behind 0-2 to 1-9 at half time. We revived a bit in the third quarter when we posted 2-2 to close the gap to 0-5, but in the final quarter Kilmallock were ahead in fitness, pace, general skill and pulled away again, and though we battled to the final whistle the points deservedly went to the team that many felt would be there, or thereabouts, when county junior honours are being distributed. All our lads tried hard but there is plenty of room for improvement.
Team: Stephen Kelly, Seán Browne, Pa Keane, Darragh McMahon, Evan Egan, Paul Hannon, Niall Enright, Eoin Hurley 0-1, Mark Lenihan, Aaron McCarthy 0-1, Stephen Nix, Mike McMahon 1-2, Tony O'Connor 1-2, Mike Mulcahy, Michael Dowling. Subs: Tom Ryan, Conor Fanning, Daniel Copse. Training continues.

Minor Hurling West A Championship round 1
Newcastle West ..........3-7
Tournafulla ................2-8
Tour was the venue on Friday, ground conditions were excellent and the weather was dry but cold. The Monagea lads are not with us this year and it was great to be able to field a full side, plus two subs, all well able to hurl; we'll need them if we are to survive as a hurling club. The game was score for score, well contested and Tour led at half time 1-6 to 0-5. The final ten minutes were when we won the game with Brian Hurley and Shane Stack striking the goals that had us singing all the way home from scenic Tour, one of the bastions of hurling. Our lads played with plenty of skill and resolve, this group is synonymous with spirit, effort, 100% input by each and every player, etc, and it was great to see long term injury victim Jack Fanning back in action
Team: Conor O'Sullivan, Killian McMahon, Conor Barry, Jack Fanning, Kieran Nix, William Hurley, Darragh Mc- Mahon, Seamus Hurley 0-1, Thomas Darcy, Shane stack 1-0, Brian Hurley 1-5, Shane Lee, Liam McCartan 1-1, Caleb O'Shea, Declan O'Connor. Subs: Seán Murphy, A. J. O'Connor.

U16 Hurling Championship round 1
Newcastle West ........2-12
Adare ..........................3-7
Adare have been the top hurling club in West Limerick for many years, so any victory over them is a notable achievement. The fact that it was our second win against them in successive championships at this age grade is further evidence of progress being made at underage level in Newcastle West.
Knowing the importance of this game to our chances of progressing to the knockout stages later this season, our lads were up for it from the start. From the throw-in Diarmuid Kelly won possession and quickly passed to Dylan Whelan. Collecting on the run Dylan drilled over our first point within 10 seconds. Newcastle West built on the good start with further scores from Dylan, Diarmuid and one excellent point from Liam Dowling. Liam and Ronan Creedon combined to get a vital goal midway through the first half. Mikey Carroll and Mykola Blashkiv were picking up a lot of possession and kept the Adare defence on the back foot while Colm Foley was always available to collect the ball from our defence and midfield. A bit more composure in front of goal and quicker striking could have yielded more scores for our dominant forwards. Instead a lapse of concentration out the field saw Adare get a goal against the run of play to add to two points from frees and one magnificent score from the halfway line saw half time called with the score Newcastle West 1-8 Adare 1-3.
Thomas Griffin and Michael Begley joined the forwards for the second half and both were to make a major contribution. The expected Adare fight-back started immediately and an old-fashioned pushover goal saw our lead cut to two points. Our lads dug deep and rattled over three points to restore the margin to 5. Our backs saw a lot more action in this half and were equal to the task. The half back line of Cillian McMahon, Seamus Hurley and Dwayne McCoy broke up many attacks with help from Brian Curtin and Diarmuid in midfield. The full back line showed great bravery and got in a huge amount of hooking and blocking to preserve our lead. Joseph Nash, Jack Downey and Lee Woulfe never gave an inch and can take a lot of the credit for this win. Killian Brouder is adapting well to the goalkeeping duties, and as well as making some great saves his puck-outs launched a lot of our attacks. Unfortunate injuries to Seamus and Killian Mac stretched our resources in the last few minutes but Ben Finnegan and Dylan Campbell came on and, together with a massive contribution from Liam Dowling we held out for a 2 point win.
Panel: Killian Brouder, Lee Woulfe, Jack Downey, Joe Nash, Cillian McMahon, Seamus Hurley, Dwayne McCoy, Brian Curtin, Diarmuid Kelly, Mikey Carroll, Dylan Whelan, Colm Hurley, Mykola Blashkiv, Liam Dowling, Roman Creedon, Michael Begley, Tommy Griffin, Ben Finnegan, Dylan O'Connell, Michael Collins, Jack Nash, Oisin Brennan. It was good to see Michael Collins return from injury.

U15 football round 1
Mungret .....................1-5
Newcastle West ..........2-6
This was a game of two halves in Mungret last Wednesday. Newcastle West started well and dominated all areas of the field to lead 2-3 to 0-1 at half time and probably should have been further ahead. A strong start to the second half yielded another three points and we looked comfortable. However, Mungret finally found their rhythm and dominated the final 15 minutes. We lost our shape and our composure at this stage and only goalie Ronan St. John and the crossbar denied Mungret victory. We have a lot of work to do to progress in a tough group with games against Monaleen and Old Christians to come.
Panel: Ronan St. John, Lee Woulfe, Cormac Nash, Dylan O'Connell, Brian Curtin, Jack Downey, Thomas Griffin, Dylan Whelan, Niall McAuliffe, Damien Keenan, Darragh Enright, Michael Begley, Ben Finnegan, Mikey Carroll, Ross Donovan, Jack Nash, Seán Walton, Oisin Brennan.

Intercounty Minor Hurling Munster Championship round 1 semi-final
Limerick played Tipperary and are to play Cork; deflated somewhat by the Limerick seniors' under-performances in the league, Limerick hurling supporters were given a big lift by the minors' victory over Tipperary a week ago at the Gaelic Grounds. Cork stand between Brian Ryan's team and a Munster final appearance.

Intercounty minor football Munster Championship round 1
Limerick are to play Cork. Best of luck to players Andy Brouder, Seán Murphy, Seán Ivess, Shane Stack, Brian Hurley and Gerry O'Sullivan (team manager and club senior trainer) against Cork today at Pairc Ui Rinn. Our lads are excellent footballers and will give 100% at Pairc Ui Rinn. Cork of course are overwhelming favourites and the back door is the likely route for Limerick.

U10 Football Blitz
An U10 Regional Football Blitz was held on Friday last in Mick Neville Park. This was one of three regional venues, the others being UL Arena and Hospital Herbertstown. According to GDA and current Limerick hurler James Ryan, the blitz in Mick Neville Park was one of the best supported blitzes in a while with 15 clubs taking part with a total of 20 teams. Again we had a great turnout of boys, and had enough to field 2 teams. We played 6 teams in total, Askeaton, Knockaderry, Fr Casey's, Ballyagran and Kildimo. There were some extremely competitive games on a very fine evening which was conducive to playing great football. We won all games, displaying the skills of kicking, catching and scoring throughout all games. Football was the real winner with two great team displays.
Players involved are Aaron Mullane, Conor Collins, Oisin Collins, John O'Grady, Aaron Neville, James Lyons, Adam Costello, Emmet Richter, Fionn Ahern, Sean Geraghty, Niall O'Doherty, Jamie O'Reagan, Kasper Bochnak, Con Hayes, Sean Thorley, Patrick Noonan and John Whelan.
