Senior Hurling.
On last Saturday night in Caherconlish Ahane started out on their 2013 senior hurling campaign against near neighbours South Liberties. A large crowd attended this match on a miserable evening. A gale force wind was blowing from the village end. Ahane lost the toss and South Liberties elected to play with the wind. Ahane were first on the score board when John Meskell cut a side line over the bar. South Liberties replied with 4 pts on the trot and were having the upper hand. Ahane were finding the going tough against the wind. After 10 mins Ahane moved Paul O Hallorhan to midfield to act as a third man and Ahane started to get on top and scored 4 pts without reply. The surface of Caherconlish was soft due to the rain and this made conditions for both teams tough as players were slipping. In the 17th min Ahane's Richie Ryan pounced and latched the sliotor to the South Liberties net. Two mins later Tom Morrissey rounded his man soloed and buried the sliotor in the South Libertied net. Ahane were well on top now. South Liberties repied with 2 pts before half-time. This left the score at half time Ahane 2- 04 South Liberties 0-06. The second half started and South Liberties were first on the score sheet with a point. Ahane replied. As the rain fell this made condition even worse and with both teams struggling with the elements scores were hard to come by. Ahane had a goal disallowed for a square ball and then went to score 4 pts without reply from South Liberties. Points were exchanged between both teams and as the match ended the final few minutes Ahane with stood the South Liberties pressure and were glad to hear referee Mike Meade's final whistle. Ahane lost captain F Ahearn to a leg injury just on full time. Ahane gave championship debuts to Cathal Rtan Tom Morrissey Paul O Hallorhan Robert Kelly who all aquitte themselves well on the night. Ahane lined out as follows, J Hayes, R Kelly, C O Reilly, C Ryan, M Carr, D Morrissey, P Treacy, N Moran, F Ahearn, D Laing, J Meskell, R Ryan, T Morrissey, S O Connor, P O Hallorhan. Subs used M Foley, S Hartnett. Ahane take a break for a few weeks now and their next match in the championship is against Garryspillane.
Ahane Under 16 Girls Football County Novice League Champions
Ahane were crowned league champions for the first time, followed their victory over Shamrock Gaels, on the score line Ahane 2-6 to Shamrock Gaels 2-3. In a very sporting game, played in ideal conditions and both sides giving it everything, Ahane got the edge in the second half and never looked back. It would be unfair to single out any one of the girls as it was a superb team effort. Team Lineout: Katie Molloy, Christine O'Grady, Niamh Reynolds, Sine Hartigan, Aoife Quinn, Niamh Martin, Emma Hennessy, Aine O'Curry, Kate Herbert (0-2), Siofra Keane (0-2), Robyn Nugent, Caoimhe Macken, Nicole Byrnes. Subs: Aine Reynolds (2-2) for Nicole, Niamh O'Curry for Christine and Aimee Griffin for Caoimhe. Rest of Panel: Catriona O'Halloran Emma Ridder, Aoife O'Halloran and Aisling Herbert.
