West Junior A Football League
Fr. Caseys 1-09 Cappagh/Kilcornan 1-05
Fr. Caseys Junior A Footballers travelled to Cappagh last Tuesday evening to take on Cappagh/Kilcornan in round two of the West League. After a very impressive victory over Glin in the opening round, Fr. Caseys were looking to continue winning ways. Fr. Caseys first point came from the fist of Jamie O'Connor and moments later Cathal Broderick was on target to double the lead. Both sides then exchanged frees with John Lenihan as accurate as ever for Fr. Caseys. A perfectly stroke 45 from Cappagh reduced the margin and moments later they were level thanks to their first point from play. Despite controlling possession and looking the more dangerous in attack, Fr. Caseys wasteful shooting was causing them issues. A point free from David Collins before the interval put Fr. Caseys back into a deserved lead but improvements were needed in the second half. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-04, Cappagh/Kilcornan 0-03.
A pointed free from John Lenihan opened the second half scoring and moments later Fr.Caseys were three points in front when David Collins guided the ball over the bar after great play from Cormac Roche. A long range point from Cappagh kept them in contention and then midway through the half a long ball from midfield found the Cappagh full forward in space and with just the keeper to beat he made no mistake to hit the net and put Cappagh into a one point lead. A point from David Collins from close range levelled proceedings but Cappagh replied and nearly scored their second goal of the net only for James O'Mara to pull off a magnificent save and deflect the ball over the bar. With ten minutes remaining the game was in the melting pot. Cormac Roche was denied a point by the post but when the ball rebounded Donal Og O'Connor reacted the quickly and rifled the ball into the net from close range to send Fr. Caseys into a two point lead. There was no turning back from this point onwards and pointed frees from Jamie O'Connor and John Lenihan in the final five minutes wrapped up a hard fough four point victory for Fr. Caseys. The final score was Fr. Caseys 1-09, Cappagh/Kilcornan 1-05.
