INTERMEDIATE HURLING COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 1
Hammer and tongs and the kitchen sink and handbag (maybe) and down to the wire probably!
Newcastle West v Knockaderry
Dromcollogher is the venue on Friday and there's a 7pm throw in. More often than not there's little between the teams with wins shared on different occasions. We're experiencing a bit of an injury crisis and if the doubtful are forced to pull out, we could be in trouble! Time will tell. One way or the other an interesting game awaits and no serious Magpie supporter will miss it.
SENIOR FOOTBALL COUNTY LEAGUE
Newcastle West v Monaleen
There was a walkover for us on Saturday last with the 2012 County Cham-pions unable to field a team.
JUNIOR B FOOTBALL WEST CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 1
Newcastle West......2-12 Mountcollins...............3-7
Dromcollogher was the venue on Friday last. The first half went well for us and we led 0-8 to 0-3 at half time. Midway through the second half we were 0-8 to the good, seemingly home and dried. However, Mountcollins footballers don't do giving up and for the last quarter it was backs to the wall for James Hennessy's team as they struggled for the win that had at one stage looked inevitable. We survived, but only just! Sweet are the uses of adversity.
Team: James Stack, Padraig Devine, Seán Barrett, Michael O'Leary, Ronan Kelleher, Karl Linehan, Tommy Kelleher, John Lydon, Gavin Riedy 0-1, Kevin O'Shea 0-5, Shane Kelly 0-2, Mark Doherty, Chris Neville 1-0, Conor Whelan 1-0, Jonathan Carey 0-3. Subs: Conor Fanning, Seánie Gleeson, Ger Cremin, Cian Sheehan, Tony Aherne, Kieran McMahon, Brian O'Sullivan, Eoin Nor-moyle, Conor Fitzgerald.
JUNIOR B FOOTBALL WEST LEAGUE ROUND 3
Newcastle West v St. Kieran's
Coolcappa, Tuesday May 8th, 7pm. To date we're unbeaten in League and Championship and have the quality footballers on board who could - if committed, serious and training - claim silverware.
NB: The above game has been rescheduled to Sunday next 7.30pm at the Field.
MINOR
The Championsips are parked while many of the players focus on the Leaving Cert. OK in football, room for improvement in hurling is the midterm report on the Newcastle West and Monagea amalgamation.
UNDER 21 HURLING COUNTY A CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
Ahane.........................1-18
Kilfrush Gaels...........0-17
UNDER 16 - UNDER 15 - UNDER 14 COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 2
Newcastle West v Adare, Newcastle West v Drom Broadford
Disappointing in the defeat to the Ballyagran and Feenagh-Kilmeedy amalgamation. The U14 hurlers recovered to win against Adare and Drom Broadford. Details have not reached the PROs desk as these notes go to press.
U15 Football County Blitz
Newcastle west.........0-11
Ballybrown................0-5
Slow to start we went in at half time leading 0-4 to 0-3 but well ahead on the wides tally. The second half saw the more fliud movement and 7 more points followed. We finished with a lead of 6 points with Brian Hurley kicking 7-6 frees many worked by Liam McCartan.
Game 2 v Monaleen
Newcastlewest.............3-6
Monaleen......................0-2
We were very dominant throughout with Darragh Fox's goal a gem and Thomas Darcy, Eoin Sheridan, and Sean Murphy excellent all through.
Game 3
Newcastlewest.............3-4
Mungret.......................2-1
Two late Mungret goals put a gloss on this score line. We were well in command after goals from Liam McCartan and Brian Hurley and some good points from Sean Ivess. We lost William and Brian Hurley to injury, hopefully nothing serious as the final takes place next Sunday at 1.15pm in Mike Neville Park, Rathkeale v Monaleen.
Panel: Conor O'Sullivan, Caleb O'Shea, Eoin Sheri-dan, Gerald Griffen, Shane Lee, Sean Ivess (2pts), William Hurley (2pts), Sean Murphy, Thomas Darcy(0-1), Brian Hurley (1-10), Liam McCartan (3-4), Darragh Morr-issey (1-0), Adam Harring-ton (0-1), Conor Walton, Darragh Fox (1-0), Seamus Hurley (0-1).
UNDER 12 COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE ROUND 2
Newcastle West v Killeedy
This Thursday 6.45pm at the Field. Training is on Tuesdays 5.30pm, and on Thursdays at 5.30pm when there's no game, and sometimes on Saturdays also.
UNDER 10
Training is on Saturdays at 10am, with the players being put through their paces and getting a good grounding in the arts of Gaelic football and hurling by the experienced triumvirate Derry McMahon, Brendan Duggan and Kenneth Mortell. There are Cluster Blitzes aplenty and we hope to have a run down on them next week.
Late note: Hurling blitz in Abbeyfeale on Fridy at 6.30pm.
UNDER 8 HURLING BLITZ
Coolcappa was the venue on Friday last with ourselves, St. Kieran's twice, and Killeedy the teams in action, and Austin Geraghty, John Collins, Mike Kirwan and Roger Hayes (himself a Killeedy hurler of consequence) in charge. A good time was had by all and there was plenty of quality hurling to savour. Hopefully we'll have the full sceál for next week's notes.
Training is on Saturdays from 10-11am, and on Wednesdays 6.30-7.30pm at the Allweather.
UNDER 7 TRAINING
Saturdays 10-11.15am, and a second session imminent (probably on Wednesdays 6.30-7.30pm).
The emphasis is on hurling but the Péil will make its appearance in due course. All who were born in 2005/2006 are welcome.
SENIOR HURLING COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 1
Adare v Granagh-Ballingarry
The Field on Saturday next at 7pm. A chance to see Donal O'Grady, Mark Foley (maybe), Declan Hannon (maybe), and up and comings like John Fitzgibbon, Willie Griffin and Jodie Hannon in action. Should be worth a visit.
LOTTERY
The week's draw for a jackpot and five €40 lucky dips was scheduled to take place on Tuesday with the change from the usual Monday, due to the bank holiday. The club thanks all who are supporting, promoting and hosting the lottery.
SYMPATHY
All in the club extends sympathy to the Aherne family on the death of Jack. Jack operated a busy and popular shop at Lower Maiden Street for many years. May he rest in peace.
