Champions make losing start

Monaleen suffered an early setback in their quest to retain the Limerick SFC title when they succumbed to a 0-9 to 1-10 defeat to Ballylanders at Hospital last Sunday.

Former county star Johnny Murphy was outstanding at midfield for Ballylanders, who avenged their 2011 quarter-final loss to the county champions with this victory. Wing back Steven Fox's 18th minute goal gave Ballylanders a 1-7 to 0-7 lead at the break, and they never looked in any danger in the second half.

In Tournafulla, Michael Quilligan scored 1-4 as Newcastle West defeated Drom-Broadford 1-10 to 0-8. Fr Casey's sent out a warning by hammering St. Patrick's 4-15 to 0-4, St. Kieran's finished strongly to overcome Galbally 0-9 to 0-6, while last year's intermediate champions Mountcollins edged out Adare on a 1-11 to 1-9 scoreline.

In the other first round game, St. Senan's and Ballysteen couldn't be separated for the second year in-a-row, the final score being 0-13 to 1-10.
