Training
Training underway for adult teams!
"Yes, spring is here,
The long, long winter's over,
The daffodils begin to peep and show,
The ball is moving lively on the sod now,
I'll get my gear and to the field I'll go."

Whatever about the winter being over and the daffodils beginning to "peep and show" club teams are beginning to get their gear and head to the field (or to the all-weather to be more correct). Those reporting for duty and the times of the sessions are as follows.

Football
Wednesdays from 8pm to 9.30pm and Saturdays at 3pm. The Wednesday session is a conditioning session for all adult players, footballers and hurlers, while Saturday is for those who aspire to play football - senior, junior B and U21 in 2012. Obviously managers will be hoping for a 100% attendance. The above sessions are now underway.

Hurling
Mondays from 7pm to 9pm and Wednesdays from 8pm to 9.30pm. All who aspire to lineout with the inters, juniors Bs or U21s should make every effort to attend. The Monday sessions, starting on January 30th, comprise of a blitz with players organised into 8 teams and the league climaxing in a final. The Wednesday session is all about conditioning, while the dual players who want to work on their football skills will not miss out on the Saturdays. All in all opportunity knocks for all players, dual and single sport, who want to achieve high fitness levels and work on the skills of their particular sport. N.B. The make-up of the 8 teams taking part in the hurling blitz can be viewed on the club website, www.ncwgaa.com.

Minor Hurlers
Fridays from 7pm to 8pm. The possibility is that with neither club capable of fielding a minor hurling team of its own, ourselves and Monagea will join to form a 15-a-side team, Training started on Friday 20th January.

Minor footballers
The minor footballers, who will certainly be Premier in the County championship, commence training on Wednesday 8th February. County U16 A champions in 2011, we'll be among the favourites for County championship honours.

U16/U14/U12 and U10
The situation re training should be clearer after next Monday's Coiste na nÓg meeting.

U8
Training is on Saturdays from 10am to 11.30am at the all-weather pitch. All who are 8 years of age in 2012 (born in 2004) are welcome.

U7 Hurling
Training is ongoing at the community centre on Fridays from 6pm to 7pm and all who are 7 or 6 years of age in 2012 (born in 2005/06) are welcome. There's a cover charge of €2 per player per session to cover the cost of the hall, indoor hurleys are provided and a certain number of hurleys are available to borrow but bring your own if possible.

Coiste na nÓg Meeting
The Coiste, which has responsibility for teams from U16 to U7, meets on Monday next, January 30th, at 8pm.

Senior Hurling
Inter Divisions County Championship Qualifier

Western Gaels v Emmet's
Seán Browne and Niall Enright are on the Gaels panel, Peter Curtin snr is a selector. The teams compete home and away with the winning team participating in the County senior championship. The Gaels home game may take place at the Field.

West All Stars 2012
Congratulations to club president, Mort O'Connor, Mark O'Doherty and A.J. O'Connor who have been selected as West All Stars 2012 and will be presented with their prestigious and well deserved awards at the annual West Board All Stars banquet in the Devon Inn on Saturday 11th February.
Mort, who has given a lifetime of quality service to club, division, county and the GAA on and off the field of play for more than half a century wins a personality award. A notable dual player in his playing days who lined out for Limerick in hurling, won County senior championship medals with Western Gaels in hurling (1961 and 1962) and football (1960), and a County junior football medal with the club (1960), Mort also trained many club teams to west and County successes, served on most positions on the club executive, was PRO for the West Board for many years, has been an ever present in club activity since the 1950s, remains an avid supporter of club and county teams, has served club, division, county and GAA in general, is fully deserving of his most recent accolade and all in the club congratulate him.
Mark Doherty wins the junior B football award for his performances with the team that won the West Championship. A very stylish footballer and prolific scorer from play and frees, the elusive and hardworking forward was central to the junior Bs successes and is fully deserving of his selection as a West All Star.
Right corner back on the minor football team that won the West B Championship and reached the County Final (losing to Killulta Gaels), 16 year old A.J. O'Connor (also a hurler of note), U16s again this year had a memorable year giving standout displays with his team as it won the West and reached the County Final. He also excelled for the U16 footballers as they swept to Premier County Championship success, and made a big impact with the minor and U16 hurlers in their campaigns. Again a well deserved award for a versatile, talented and committed dual player.

County Football
Many of our footballers are involved with county teams. On the extended senior panel are Stephen Kelly, Michael O'Keeffe, Stephen Nix and Michael Quilligan, while Paul Hannon, Jamie Lee, Brian O'Doherty, Donnacha Woods and Thomas Quilligan are with the U21s. In addition Joe (senior) and Billy (U21) are mentors with the respective teams. The seniors open their National League Division 4 campaign with an away game against Leitrim while the U21s look forward to the Munster Championship campaign. Best of luck to all.
