Limerick Bord na n-Og Convention

January 24, 2012
The Annual convention of Bord na n-Og took place in Claughaun last Thursday to a packed attendance. Mike Rea, outgoing Secretary, gave a comprehensive report on 2011 events with over 1000 fixtures completed in hurling & football between the ages of 13 to 16 years. He also noted a considerable drop in walk-overs on previous years. He also gave a very positive report on the activities of underage inter-county hurling panels which are also under the charge of Bord na n-Og and were all highly competitive. The introduction of Core training and sessions in UL sponsored by Gerry McManus had greatly assisted in underage inter-county panels. Chairman, Tony Roche spoke of the 2011 initiative, the Board brought in to allow players play with amalgamated teams and also return to play with their clubs. This proved highly successful this year with both Feohanagh-Castlemahon and Kileedy winning co titles at underage while their players also assisted Dell Rangers in a higher grade. He strongly criticised the fact this year, that management teams the board put in place for county panels at underage level and who were together for a number of years with a panel, were being unravelled by the Senior Board when they went onto Minor levels. Conversely, he also paid tribute to management teams that had served at adult level now making themselves available at juvenile level. Included were the highly experienced Leo O'Connor, Pat Donnelly and George Lee who have made themselves available this year to underage teams this year. He strongly criticised that a fixture calendar which was at the early stages of discussion was published prematurely before Bord na n-Og approved. Finally, he advocated the re-introduction of competitive fare at U12 levels. Treasurer Denis Carroll gave a very comprehensive report on a difficult financial year which saw big drops in revenue. PRO, Aidan Ryan thanked the Limerick Leader, Vale Star and Western Observer for assisting him getting fixtures and results published weekly during 2011. It was a huge support to the Board to see almost all of the County Senior Board in attendance and they all spoke at the convention. Senior Chairman, Liam Lenihan and all the other senior officers thanked Mike Rea who is stepping down as Secretary after having completed 5 years service. Liam also picked up on Bord na n-Og's novel initiative of allowing players play with amalgamations and then return to their own club stating that the Senior Board would consider following this initiative. Senior Treasurer Owen Hayes spoke about his role as Feile na nGael co-ordinator and with Feile na nGael national finals in Limerick in 2013, he was putting the final names to his organising committee and hoped incoming Bord na n-Og Secretary, Breda Breen would be part of that committee. Senior Secretary, Mike O'Riordan spoke about the continued development of Mick Neville Part and thanked Gerry & J.P McManus for all their support of Limerick GAA both adult and juvenile. He also acknowledged both Na Piarsaigh & Newcastle West's progression to their respective national finals in Feile in hurling & football. He thanked all bodies working for underage hurling & football including Bord na -n-Og, Coaching & Games and the Implementation committee. Also to speak were new Irish officer, Micheal O'Riain, Development Officer, Liam O'Sullivan, incoming child protection officer, Gerry McNamara, Vice-Chairman, Oliver Mann and Munster Council Delegate Mickey O'Sullivan.
