Harty Cup quarter-final roundup
January 19, 2012
Holders Ardscoil Ris, Colaiste na nDeise and De La Salle have qualified for the last four of the Harty Cup, while Thurles CBS and Nenagh CBS must replay their quarter-final.
Kevin O'Brien's 50th minute goal proved decisive as Limerick's Ardscoil Ris defeated local rivals Castletroy College 2-15 to 1-7 in Bruff. The holders led by 1-4 to 0-5 at the break thanks to Jack Kelliher's 20th minute goal, but Edward Doyle's penalty after the restart raised the prospect of an upset before O'Brien's major turned the game back in Ardscoil Ris' favour.
Colaiste na nDeise edged out traditional giants St. Flannan's of Ennis 1-13 to 1-12, despite playing the whole game with 14 players. The west Waterford side had midfielder Kieran Power red-carded before the throw-in following an incident involving Martin O'Leary, but they overcame their numerical disadvantage thanks to Cathal Curran's 10-point haul and Michael Hurney's contribution of 1-1.
De La Salle ensured there will be two Waterford teams in the semi-final draw after they powered to a 2-12 to 0-7 victory over Midleton CBS at Cappoquin. Darragh Flynn bagged seven first half points to help the winners to a 1-7 to 0-6 interval lead, and substitute Conor Sheridan's goal six minutes from the end sealed a comfortable win.
Meanwhile, Tipperary rivals Nenagh CBS and Thurles CBS will have to meet again after Seamus Kennedy's point in the 10th minute of injury-time earned Nenagh a 0-16 to 1-13 draw.
Referee Fergal Horgan played over 11 minutes of additional time after an injury to Nenagh full back Niall Glesson caused a long break in the play.
