Limerick camogie notes
August 31, 2010
County U14 Team
On Saturday 28th August the Limerick girls attended the final blitz of the year in Thurles. Having taken part in 4 other blitzes this year winning one and reaching the final in another a lot of preparation including challenge games took place in anticipation of the Tipp Blitz. Again for this blitz two panels attended - the A panel comprised mostly by the older girls in their final year under 14 and the B panel representing the younger girls and rising stars for next year's panel.
The B panel participated in Section B of the competition which was divided into two groups. Limerick who were in group 1 had challenges against Cork (3-2 to 0-0), Waterford (3-5 to 0-0) and Dublin (1-4 to 0-2). Despite the result in each game, these young bunch of girls showed great heart and were a credit to themselves, their clubs and parents. They have gained from the experience of this blitz and other blitzes and will be back next year as most of them are still U14 in 2011. Thanks to Paul Doyle, Ger Curtin and Theresa Noonan for their care, encouragement and coaching of these girls throughout the day and throughout the year.
On then to the A panel. These girls will now move on to represent Limerick at intercounty level U16 next year with most of them having played U14 for the past two years. At U14 they have been a fantastic group of girls, displaying team spirit, skill determination, respect to their mentors and a huge sense of pride to their parents. They should be so proud of the manner in which they have represented their county and clubs and the achievements gained at U14 level. On Saturday they were pitted against the best U14 teams in the country. Section A was divided into two groups. Limerick were in Group 1 meeting Tipperary (draw 0-2 to 0-2), Offaly (win 7-5 to 0-0). These results saw us winning our section and meeting the losers from Group 2 (Dublin, Cork, Clare) in the semi final. This was Dublin, our new great rivals of 2010. Limerick showed their dominance on this occasion winning (4-6 to 1-1). Tipperary contested the other semi final against Group 2 winners Cork, with Tipp coming out on top (6-2 to 1-1).
The organisers of the Tipp Blitz had arranged that the two finalists got to play the final on the wonderful Semple Stadium next door to Dr Morris Park where the blitz was being held. The girls got to use the dressing rooms used by their hurling heroes who graced this stadium in the past, and even better play on the same soil that they played on. Unfortunately for the Limerick girls this great occasion was marred by a very biased and unfair display of refereeing by the Tipperary appointed referee. The final comprised two 12 minutes halves. Limerick got off to a blistering start and looked dominant coming in at half time winning on a score of 2-00 to Tipperary 0-01.
Try as the girls might to hold the opposition in the second half , Tipperary rallied well and eventually won out by the narrowest of margins . Maybe some controversial decisions went against us in the game but the Limerick girls held their heads high and knowing they were the best team in the tournament and maybe in the country this season , they look forward to having the last laugh when they will undoubtedly meet again with this Tipperary team in years to come . In the end all went home knowing that they are winners with a promise of a knees up in a few weeks time to recognise the achievements of both U14 panels in 2010 - stay tuned for that text.
Finally, Maurice, Olive and Paul want to take this occasion of thanking all the U14 girls for being what they are - a pleasure to work with, superbly well mannered, fun to be with and wonderful sports persons for their county. We are in no doubt that these girls will bring Limerick Camogie on to great successes in years to come and that they will very soon lift an All Ireland trophy. To their parents and clubs, those that helped us along the way, and to the support of the County Board - Thank You.
