Newcastlewest GAA Club Notes

August 25, 2010
Senior footballers push
table-topping Adare all the way
Newcastle West.....................................................................................................0-12
Adare.......................................................................................................................2-7
'Goals win matches' is the axiom and so it proved at Feenagh on Saturday evening last where referee Michael Mann adjudicated an exciting, competitive and freeflowing encounter.
The first of Adare's 2 goals  came in the 41st minute, was well worked and expertly finished and left them 1-6 to 0-6 ahead. The  second came at 59 minutes when we had fought back to be 0-10 to 1-6 in front and looked ready to create one of the shocks of the championship, and it was mainly of our own making. Losing possession a bit too easily we were caught on the break. We did fight back to close the gap to a point at 61 and had the final score of the game, but this final point was preceded by a similar one from Conor Fitzgerald at 62 minutes.
Overall we played good football over the hour, with all players stepping up to the plate and a few, including Sean Barrett, Mike McMahon, Declan Brouder and captain goalie John Joe Sheehy outstanding. We suffered a major blow after 20 minutes when on his return from injury Michael Kelly, playing very well at midfield, had to go off injured. The teams were level 0-5 apiece at half time and, as we have said, Adare's two green flags in the second half were the deciders that kept us without points and in the relegation zone! Overall a committed and effective display..
Team: John Joe Sheehy, Sean Barrett, Sean Browne, Michael Dowling, Michael O'Keeffe, Stephen Nix, Sean McAuliffe, Michael Kelly, Michael McMahon, Shane Kelly, Stephen Kelly, Michael Quilligan 0-5; Donnacha Woods, Declan Brouder 0-7, Thomas Quilligan 0-1. Subs: Ian Corbett, Sean Neville, Noel Murphy, Mark O'Sullivan, Michael Mulcahy, Brian O'Doherty, Jamie Lee.
Our final preliminary round game, Round 5, is against Fr. Casey's in Tournafulla on Saturday next at 6.45pm. The Abbeyfeale lads are highflying after a poor start to the competition and beat us well some weeks ago in the league. We have to play even better than we did against Adare to inflict a second defeat on them and give us momentum for the relegation battle that lies ahead. Training continues.
We wish a speedy recovery to the unlucky Mikey Kelly.

JUNIOR B FOOTBALL
WEST CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 4
Newcastle West..............1-6
Mountcollins................1-10
At Abbeyfeale on Sunday evening last, with Sean Hartnett in charge of the whistle, we were very much over-run in the first half and were 0-1 (Mark Doherty at 22) to 1-7 behind at half time. Mountcollins were playing by far the better football and would have been farther ahead but for inaccuracy. Sean Cronin's arrival from the subs bench for the second half gave us a target man who knew where the posts were and the former county senior kicked points at 35, 36, 52 and 58 minutes to close the gap to 6 points with time enough remaining to catch up. However, from the 58th to the 63rd minute, when sub Padraig Devine goaled to close the gap to 4 points, we didn't score and the Mountcollins second team ran out fully deserving winners. As for ourselves, a lot remains to be done if we are to get our hands on the cup.
Team: James Stack, Conor Fanning, Willie Kavanagh, James Hennessy, Karl Fullam, Karl Linehan, Tommy Kelleher, Mark O'Sullivan, Gerard Cremin (0-1), Tony Doyle, Mark Doherty (0-1), Brian Hanrahan, Chris Neville, Sean Corbett, Sean Gleeson. Subs: Sean Cronin (0-4), Paul Hannon, Pat Lee, Seamus Kelly, Tony Aherne, Tony Quaid, Padraig Hennessy, Padraig Devine (1-0).

WEST U21 FOOTBALL
CHAMPIONSHIP
The West Under 21 Football Championship is round the corner, and likely to be very competitive.

MINOR FOOTBALL,
PREMIER COUNTY
CHAMPIONSHIP,
ROUND 7
Newcastle West v Fr. Casey's
This game will either extend or end our season. Next Friday week in Abbeyfeale, with both teams on the edge of exit, a full-blooded encounter is anticipated. Training continues.

COUNTY UNDER 16
FOOTBALL
CHAMPIONSHIP,
DIVISION 2 SEMI FINAL
Newcastle West..............0-7
Ahane..............................1-7
Even without the formidable Martin Mullane and Andrew Ruddle, we should have won at Kildimo on Wednesday August 18th. Like Cork on Sunday last, we enjoyed a monopoly of possession, but sadly had left our shooting boots at home. Thus we put our names to a succession of wides from play and from frees and, much against the run of play, exited from a championship we certainly could have won. Tyrone did the same against the Dubs in the quarter final, and Cork nearly did so on Sunday last. Not much of a consolation for our lads who played well generally.
Team: Andy Brouder, Joey Healy, Eoin Murphy, Rossa Dooley, Eoin Hurley, Gavin Reidy, Sean Darcy, Jack McCarthy, Cian Sheehan, Ryan Clancy, Eoin Normyle, Peter Shanahan, Darragh Quilligan, Jordan Power, Martin Madden. Subs: Daniel Copse, Brian Sheehy, A.J. O'Connor, Shane Stack.
Referee: Shane Forestal

COUNTY UNDER 16
HURLING
CHAMPIONSHIP
DIVISION 2, SHIELD
QUARTER FINAL
Newcastle West............3-10
Naomh Bríd.................2-11
In contrast to the Junior B footballers on Sunday evening, the U16 hurlers had a brilliant opening 30 minutes at the field on Monday last. Granagh-Ballingarry's Paddy Carroll refereed. Daniel Copse scored 1-2 and six players in total shared in the 3-7 we had amassed at half time, when we led the east Limerick combination 3-7 to 0-3. Naomh Bríd, very poor in the first half, got their act together in the second and 11 minutes after the resumption were a mere 4 points in arrears. We were playing very badly, or not being allowed to play well, but roused ourselves to enjoy a mini purple patch when we scored a quick 0-3. However, Naomh Bríd raised the bar considerably in the concluding 10 minutes and only luck and some excellent goalkeeping by Andy Brouder kept the visitors at bay. They narrowed the gap to 2 points but could get no closer.
Team: Andy Brouder, Brian Sheehy, Conor Barry, Conor Relihan, Joey Healy, Gavin Reidy, Rossa Dooley, Ryan Clancy, Eoin Hurley (0-1), Cian Sheehan (0-1), Jack McCarthy (1-1), Shane Stack (0-2), Daniel Copse (1-3), Eoin Murphy (1-1), Peter Shanahan. Subs: Sean Darcy (0-1), Darragh Quilligan, Darragh McMahon, Martin Madden. Training continues.

Surprisingly, Monaleen, one of the top teams in the county, gave us a walkover in the final round of the county championship.

LOTTERY
Last Monday's draw took place at the Courtenay Lodge. The numbers drawn were 1, 11, 12 and 30. The jackpot of €7,200 was not won. The five €40 lucky dip winners were: Evelyn Shanahan, c/o Mike Sammon, Gráinne O'Connor, Glenastar, c/o Kay KcCoy, Nora Reidy, c/o Ed Lynch's, Brian Fitzgerald, Richard Daly, Ashford, c/o Martin Sheehan.
This week's jackpot is €7,400. The draw takes place at the Ballintemple on Monday next August 30th at 11pm. The club thanks all who are supporting, promoting and hosting the lottery.

Under 14 Football
Our final group game in the championship was due to take place at the field on Monday evening. Unfortunately our opponents, Monaleen were unable to get a team together and conceded the points. We now move on to the knockout stages with a quarter final next Wednesday, September 1st with our opposition to be decided by final league positions.

Under 13 Hurling
The second round of this competition is on today, Wednesday in Tournafulla. A win would mean qualification for the semi final but as always Tour will provide a tough challenge. In preparation for this game we played Deel Rangers at the field last Wednesday in a entertaining and keenly contested challenge game.

Under 14 Hurling
Best of luck to Conor Barry who lines out with Limerick under 14 hurling team in the inter-county tournament in Waterford at the weekend.
