City GAA Board Notes

March 03, 2010
The City Division had three Clubs representing the City division in the County senior Scor finals in Cappamore last Weekend. But the division ended up with one county winner in which the monaleen trio of Frank Madden, Michael O Sullivan and Liam de Burca won the question time beating of the challenge of the West, South and East divisions. The Na Piarsaigh had two entries did very well but were runner up in their competitions. In the Figure Dancing the Cahirdavin club had Rita Mulqeen, Carole Griffin, Geraldine Moloney, Evelyn Collins, Karen Flanagan and Noelle Dillon. In the solo singing Na Piarsaigh's Sonya Danaher sang the beautiful “Sally Gardens” but lost out to the East singer. The Instrumental Music section the Crecora club performed well when Aoife Neville, Denis Kelleher, Eileen Kelleher, Gillian Collins and Elaine Ryan but lost out narrowly. Crecora's other entry was Dan Sheedy in the Recitation section when he recited “The Ballad of Fr. Gilligan” but lost out to the West. In the Ballad group section the Monaleen group performed very well when Breda Kenny, Mark Kenny, Sarah Hawe, Siobhan Fitzpatrick and Rebecca Kieran's sang and played, but were second to the East group in the final. The Board would like to thank all those who represented the division very well and also their Clubs. The City interdivisional hurling team faced Western Gaels last Sunday at Ballygran. The City team needed to win this championship game to keep involved in the championship but were second best to the West side when the final whistle blew. We started well when Peter Russell opened our account with a point >from play in the fifth minute our next score came from Alan O Connor when he pointed from a free midway in the first half. Alan O Connor did hit a point from play, before Alan he hit our first goal of the game when Brien Quinn and Michael Kiely did all the build upto the goal. Leading by 1-03 to 0-04 with minutes remaining of the first half Ritchie Kenny and Peter Russell added a point each before the short whistle to leave us leading by one point 1-05 to 0-07 at the break. In the second half we increase our lead by three points when Alan O Connor added two points one from a free the West reduced the lead to two points before Patrick Howard put us five points ahead with a well taken goal with ten minutes gone in the second half. After the goal we found it very difficult to get scores and when the West hit us for a goal from a penalty and two points to level the match again, with twelve minutes left we only hit over two more points from Alan O Connor but the West were stronger in the end and hit us with a second goal and six points to leave the final score at 2-10 to 2-16. It's a pity that the County Board put the City division out on the same day and had to play this game when a City college Ardscoil Ris were playing in their first ever historic Harty Cup Final at the same time in Nenagh. But now that we are out of the interdivisional championship at least we can now enjoy the Harty cup replay and wish Ard Scoil Ris the very best in the replay. The City team lined out as follows David Lyons (Ballybrown), Finbar Nash (Monaleen), Cian Hayes (Kildimo), Steve Reily (Ballybrown), Patrick Begley (Mungret), Des Kenny (Ballybrown), James Hall (Ballybrown), Brien Quinn (Ballybrown), Michael Doyle (Monaleen), Peter Russell (Monaleen) (0-02), Kyle Loftus (Ballybrown), Alan O Connor (Ballybrown)(1-07), Patrick Howard (Old Christians) (1-00), Ritchie Kenny (Ballybrown) (0-01) and Michael Kiely (Ballybrown) (0-01). Subs used were Evan Loftus (Ballybrown) for (Michael Doyle), Declan Normoyle (Ballybrown) for Richie Kenny and Thomas Quirke for Patrick Begley. The Board would like to thank the City divisional panel and the management of Sean Bourke (Crecora) and his selectors Sean Maher (St.Patrick's) Paul Nunan (Pallaskenry) and Trevor Mann (Ballybrown) for the time and effort that they all put in over the past month and also to John Daly our First Aid officer who was a great help to the players at training and at the matches.
