Claughaun GAA Club Notes
November 09, 2009
A Cháirde,
With hurling and football action over for another year, our underage club have compiled a series of end-of-term reviews of their campaigns at the different age groups. Under-10 coach Nial Hehir led his squad into their first year of 'Lifting the Treaty,' and shares his thoughts on the season past:
The core principle of the new 'Lifting the Treaty' programme is participation by all in non-competitive games. The number of matches and blitzes played hugely benefited all the players. Their skills have greatly improved and their overall commitment has been inspiring. Our first hurling match in April was against Na Piarsaigh on a wet and windy night. There then followed games against Ahane, Adare, Patrickswell, and finally Monaleen in September. We played these teams in hurling and football and were competitive in all. Some of the scores landed were great examples of striking, most notably Aran Hehir's pointed sideline puck, Jack Walsh's frequent goalscoring sprees and Ger Barry's deadly eye for goal. In defence special mention must go to Adam Creamer for his dogged determination and Dean Spink's fearless blocking. Thanks also to Michael Clancy for bringing his goalie's hurley to all the matches - a great stopping machine. In August we took part in the Munster Inter City competition held in St. Patrick's. We played St. Vincent's of Cork first and then took on our hosts. Winning both matches was a great boost to the lads' confidence. Competing so well against 'foreign' opposition bodes well for the future. This maintained our 100% record in this tournament. Special mention must also go to the two U 10 players who played with the U12 team in an exhibition blitz in Croke Park. What an honour for Nathan Breen and Aran Hehir. Let's hope many more Claughaun players play there in the green of Limerick. A selection of players took part in football and hurling academies run by Pat Culhane, co coordinator of the Mackey Cluster of which we were part of. These structures brought on the players very well. At the end of the four week schedule the players had the honour of playing in the Gaelic Grounds in a blitz. Well done to all involved. In May we had our La na gClub in Childers Road to celebrate the GAA's 125th anniversary. We had long puck competitions, soloing and penalty taking. A great family fun day was had by all. Our own end of year blitz was held in August. This showcased the talents of all our players. Everyone went home with medals, t-shirts and treats, all of which was richly deserved.
The following is a list of the U 10 hurling panel. Nathan Breen, Adam Creamer, Aran Hehir, Dean Spink, Jack Walsh, Aodhan Frain, Alan and Andrew Garland, Cian Gorey, Billy Ryan, Gearoid Sheehy, Michael Clancy, Paul Kiely, Gearoid Leo, Oisin Pearse, Ger Barry, Colin Mc Namara, Adam Hannon, Eoin Quigly, Donal Dineen. Next year Ger Leo will be taking charge of the U 10 and he is looking for participation by parents in coaching. Similarly most of the lads will be playing U 12 next year and anyone who can lend a hand will be welcomed. Finally I'd like to say that it was a pleasure to be involved with such a committed group of players. Let's carry this forward. Keep practicing and we look forward to seeing you all in the new year.
The 2009 season may be over from a playing point of view, but much activity is planned over the next few weeks as the club embarks upon one of its annual fundraising endeavours in the form of bag-packing at Dunnes Stores, Childers Road. Volunteers are being recruited at the moment and so if you have an hour or two to spare to support the club, contact Andy Cunneen at 087-9032097 to arrange a spot on the rota. The times are: Thursday 19th November, 6-7 p.m.; Friday 20th, 6-9 p.m.; Saturday 21st, noon-7 p.m. As always, all help is hugely appreciated.
Members are reminded that all motions and nominations for this year's Annual General Meeting are to reach Liam O'Sullivan, Rúnai, no later than November 23rd next. The meeting itself takes place on Thursday December 10th at 8 p.m., and will be preceded by Mass for deceased members in the club at 7.30.
Our club lotto jackpot this week was E 12,800. Tickets can be had from all the usual sellers, and from the club bar on the Childers Road. Stay posted on our website, www.claughaun.limerick.gaa.ie for results of the latest draws.
Is mise,
