Kirby backs Bennis for second term
September 04, 2008
Limerick selector Gary Kirby has backed former boss Richie Bennis to be handed a second term as Limerick senior hurling manager.
Following the poor run the county suffered this year in the All-Ireland SHC, the Limerick County Board decided to hold a nomination process from clubs to appoint a new manager and have come up with ten candidates to choose from, one of which is suppose to be the former manager.
Speaking to Des Cahill on the 'Road To Croker', to be aired tonight on RTE, Kirby stated: "Richard (Bennis) was the manager two years ago when he went for the job no-one went against him hardly. All of a sudden there's ten going for the job so he must have done something right, that they all want the job now."
After reaching the All-Ireland final in his first year in charge, this year saw Bennis' side lose out to Clare on the provincial front before exiting the All-Ireland SHC in the qualifiers to Offaly.
"The first year we had an exceptional year, getting to the final. This year was a bit of a lull, we learned things, we made mistakes, everyone makes mistakes so he's hoping to give it another shot," Kirby added.
