Limerick's Ciaran Carey is relishing the opportunity to capture a coveted All-Ireland medal in tomorrow's (Saturday) All-Ireland Intermediate Hurling Championship final against Kilkenny. Carey, who is also the Treaty hurlers Under 21 boss, has never played in an All-Ireland final at underage level for Limerick, and joked: "Usually people do Under 21, intermediate and then senior but I went the opposite route. He did, however, appear in two All-Ireland finals for Limerick seniors and lost both in 1994 to Offaly and 1996 to Wexford when he captained the side. Carey had continued on with his club Patrickswell after he'd hung-up his inter-county boots, but after being approached by intermediate boss Jerry Molyneaux to join up with the county's second tier the 38-year-old doesn't regret his decision of pulling on the Limerick jersey once more this year. "Jerry came to me at the start of the year and at first, I thought it was a big ball hop. I was hurling away with the club, enjoying it and when he came to me first, I said I wouldn't. "But he told me he was stuck for a full-back and I agreed to play in a challenge game to see if I was comfortable at that pace and that speed. "I'm still playing senior with the club and the fitness was always quite good and I never put on weight. Look at Paolo Maldini with AC Milan at 40 years of age. If the mind and body are right, you can give it a shot. Kilkenny will be looking for the start of a clean sweep of inter-county titles in four different grades this Saturday at Semple Stadium, Thurles, but Casey is confident that Limerick can come up with the goods after landing their first Munster title in a decade. "It wouldn't really come into it. Kilkenny are in four finals and more power to them. They are the county laying down a marker and they will be very strong. Seven of their Under 21 team will be with their intermediates."
