City Board Notes

August 26, 2008
One of the busiest weekend the City board had since the start of the season when most championship games got underway from last Thursday right up to Sunday evening. 7In the Round two of the Limerick Post Newspaper city junior B football championship Claughaun leads group (1) following their second win in the group when they had a convincing 2-13 to 0-03 victory over Abbey Sarsfields in the same group Mungret suffered a shock one point home defeat from Ballinacurra Gaels 0-09 to 1-05 there was no game played in group two last week but on this Thursday evening round three of the Limerick Post Newspaper city junior B football championship will continue with all games having a 7pm start. Mungret are home to Na Piarsaigh while at Ballinacurra the home team will have Abbey Sarsfields as visitors. In group two Pallaskenry who are unbeaten will entertain Milford. Last Friday evening at Childers Road, Claughaun had Killulta Gaels as visitors for the 1st playoff in the minor football championship with the winners guaranteed a final place. It was a slow start to the game as both teams were showing nerves but game ended up a very close affair when the teams were level at half time 0-07 to 1-04. With Peter Nash of Killulta Gaels hitting the Claughauns net for the only goal in the first half. Both teams started the second half well with two points from Claughaun to put them into the lead after Shane O'Brien of Killulta had pointed a free in the opening minute. But the next fifteen minutes belonged to Killulta Gaels as the pace of the game changed with Seamus McKeogh at half back and Daniel Hannon in midfield driving their team on. Ciaran Ryan goaled following good work by Ian Moore & Hannon, which was quickly followed by a point from Peter Nash who caused his marker no end of problems. Then came the killer blow for Claughaun with a third goal for Kilulta Gaels from James Carey to ensured a comfortable passage through to the final. Killulta Gaels will now await the winners of the second play off match between Claughaun and Na Piarsaigh. On Saturday last St. Patrick's and Crecora played City Permanent tsb 24 Sarsfield St. junior hurling championship at Cahirdavin the match was played in terrible conditions but at the end of the hour St Patrick's were victors by two points 1-14 to 3-06. This was a game of two halves Crecora led at the break by 3.04 to 0-05. But St. Patrick's were a different side in the second period they kept Crecora scoreless from play and all they scored was 0-02 from frees. St Patrick's on the other hand eat into the lead Crecora who had no answer to the strong runs of Niall Phelan which resulted in frees after frees. Brendan Mullins was on song with his free taking and punished Crecora each time. With ten minutes remaining Niall Phelan raised a green flag for St. Patrick's and who finished the stronger side. Both sides should be applauded for a entertaining hours hurling. And also to the Na Piarsaigh Club for having the playing pitch in great shape. On the night St. Patrick's had fine performances from Kieran Dore, Mark Phelan and Tony Quigley in defence with Kevin Maher and Barry O Doherty put in a hard hours work in the middle of the field. Scorers for the winners were Wayne Cronin (0-01) Niall Phelan (1-00) Brendan Mullins (0-07) Padraig Reales (0-02) and Patrick Mullins (0-04) Na Piarsaigh and Ballybrown put up a great game of hurling in round two of the City Nolan Motor Factors Henry St. City under 21 A hurling championship at Cahirdavin. The visitors won this game by 2-13 to 2-07 to put them back into the race following their defeat last weekend by Patrickswell. The home side trailed by 2-08 to 1-05 at the break and made little headway against the Ballybrown excellent half-back line. But the home side did missed a number of scoreable frees and will need to lift it considerably if they are to make any progress in this competition. Best for the Cahirdavin side on the day was Niall Buckley in goals Brian Shannon at centre back, David Lynch, Pat Gleeson (0-01) Gordon Leonard (1-04) and Bradley Russell (1-02) those who shined for Ballybrown were Kyle Loftus, Brien Quinn, Michael Kiely, David Hartnett, Eoin Kiely and man of the match Stephen Ryan. Na Piarsaigh will now face Patrickswell in the next round next Sunday evening Aug 31st in Patrickswell at 5pm. Pallaskenry are on course for three in row in the Horse and Hound City junior B hurling championships when they were convincing winners against Patrickswell on a scoreline of 6-22 to 0-02. Played in Rathbane in ever deteriorating conditions, the crisp clean hurling played by Pallaskenry shows that a step up to Junior A hurling beckons. Pallaskenry led by 5-16 to 0-01 at half time. Once again Pallaskenry qualify for the City Final against either Crecora or Claughaun who drew their semi final, 4-07 to 3-10, and will be replay on this Sunday evening at 6pm in Monaleen. Pallaskenry team line out as Stephen Downey, M Sheehan, A Guerin, Mike Roche, Jerome O'Connell, B O'Shea, P O'Connell, Emmitt O'Brien, Shane Loftus (0-03), Kevin Taylor (0-01), Simon Guerin (0-01), Kenny Rogers (1-08, (0-02 f)), Adrian Enright (2-02), Willie Lynch (1-03), Ollie O'Regan (1-02). Subs: Daniel Hannon, K Enright, D Sheehan, Damien O'Brien (1-00), Ger O'Dowd, Ian Gibbs (0-02), and P Daly. Best of luck to the Limerick intermediate hurling team from all at the City G.A.A. Board when they will face Kilkenny in the All Ireland final this Saturday at 3.30pm. Next board meeting will take place on this Monday at 8pm in the Woodfield House Hotel Ennis Road.   Thanking You Eamonn Phelan P.R.O.
