Minor C’ship

U12 Football

In the U12 Cois Sionna Cup competition, Shannon Gaels took on St Senans at their home pitch in Glin on Wednesday evening last. St. Senan’s started the game in a trailblazing fashion notching up 4 goals and a point to one goal and one point at half time. However, in the 2nd half our boys took the game by the scruff of the neck and to a man, put their bodies on the line, exhibiting a level of skill and a willingness to run off the ball. They notched 2 goals and 4 points with great aplomb and minimum fuss. Our defence remained solid and did not give away one score in the 2nd half running out one point winners in a nail biting finish. The squad of 20 players was Christopher Quirke, Colm McNamara, Graham McDonagh, Conor FitzGerald, Aidan Healy, Seamus Dillane, Orla Leahy, Fergal Leahy, Adam Enright, Tabo Ncubi, Jamie Riordan, Daragh Woulfe, Ruairi McEnery, Gavin Thompson, Donnach Daly, Jack Adams, Colm McNamara, Pa Dillon, Charlie McDonagh and Daragh Mullane

Intermediate C’Ship

Glin 2-11

Claughaun 0-15

There were dramatic scenes for supporters at Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale last Friday evening with a late, late penalty deciding who would stay in the competition.

We started well, with Ger Lyons and Paul Sheahan kicking over fine points in the opening minutes, but Claughaun responded with two of their own and this pattern continued throughout the opening half. Glin played their best football during this period with some fine accurate foot passing through the lines which created many scoring chances. In the tenth minute Pádraig Scanlon finished one of these moves well with a nice left footed point before Gary Culhane did the same from the right hand side. Minutes later Sheahan hit two in a row, the second an outstanding outside of the boot shot from distance. Claughaun finished the half well with 3 points in a row to leave them ahead 0-7 to 0-6 at half time.

We found the second half much tougher going. Claughaun dominated the exchanges and but for some wayward shooting and our diligent defending, they could have been much further ahead. Shane Culhane kicked a fine point in the 40th minute after skinning his man, and moments later Paul Sheahan once again raised a white flag. Coming into the last ten minutes, Scanlon and Pádraig Costello knocked over two points but Claughaun once again responded in kind, putting themselves 3 points ahead with five minutes to go. We need a lift and got it when Darren Sheahan curled over a monstrous point from 55 yards out before Ronan Culhane’s long raking ball was deflected into the net by Paul Sheahan. Glin were ahead, but more drama was to follow. Claughaun went back down the field and kicked two points of their own, putting them a point ahead once again, to the cheers of their sides supporters. The clock ticked into the last minute of injury time. A high ball into the Claughaun square was fielded beautifully by Gary Culhane who was then cynically hauled to the ground. Cometh the hour, cometh the man! Knowing only a goal would do, Paul Sheahan stepped up, and though his initial penalty was saved, he made no mistake volleying the rebound into the back of the net. The final whistle blew straight away, leaving players and supporters ecstatic with joy. Twice, we looked dead and buried, but to their credit these lads showed great character and resolve to persevere and got their just reward in the end. Man of the match was Paul Sheahan, and Brian O’Donovan and Jamie Fitzgerald had exceptional games also in defence.

Team: Seán Lyons, Jamie Fitzgerald, Brian O’Donovan, Maurice Moore, Ronan Culhane, Pádraig Costello (0-1), Jack Sheehan, Pádraig Scanlon (0-2), Paul Sheehan (2-4), Shane Culhane (capt., 0-1), Darren Sheahan (0-1), Brendan Flanagan, Gary Culhane (0-1), Ger Lyons (0-1), Edmond Horan. Subs used: Tadhg Culhane, Paddy Fitzgerald, Pádraig Horan

Intermediate playoff

After round 5, Glin, Athea and Mungret tied for 2nd in the group with 6 points each. This means a playoff is required with 2 of the 3 teams going through to the quarter finals. First up, Glin play Mungret this Tuesday, Sept. 18th at 9pm in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale. If we win, we’re through. If we lose, we play Athea a week later, with the winner of that game going through and the loser going out. After the dramatic scenes last Friday evening, your support will really be appreciated!
