Kildimo/Pallaskenry GAA Club Notes

July 10, 2018

JUNIOR A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP: There was disappointment for the Corner House-sponsored junior footballers in their first Championship match of the season, where they faced one of the favourites for the competition, Kilteely/Dromkeen. We were missing a number of players for various reasons, but started relatively well despite falling behind early in the first half. A goal from Liam O'Sullivan and some excellently-struck placed balls from Shaun Barry saw us take a very slender lead in at the half-time break.

However, in the second half, Kilteely/Dromkeen were the stronger team and managed to get a goal of their own. They defended very stoutly and we were unable to get the goal we needed to win the game. It was a decent game against a very strong side, but we know this team is capable of much improvement and there's a long way to go yet in this Championship season!

Team: John Chawke; Barry Walsh, Stephen Hodnett, Kevin O'Connell; Robert McKeogh, Lorcan O'Leary, Mossy Sheehan; Tony McCarthy, Keel Moloney; Shaun Barry, Eoin Cuddihy, Liam O'Sullivan; Ruairí Maher, Darragh Walsh, Peter Nash

Subs: Evan Carroll, Michéal Keating,

THURLES SPORTSFEST 9-A-SIDE: Our hurlers were invited to play a 9-a-side tournament at the weekend in Thurles Sarsfields' grounds. It was a very well-run competition, many thanks to Thurles Sarsfields for that, and it was great to come home with some silverware. We started the competition well, with a comprehensive victory over Thurles Gaels on a 5-8 to 0-3 scoreline. The games were very fast-paced, plenty of running involved, especially in the intense heat and a strong panel was needed! Next up, we faced Watergrasshill of Cork and struggled in the opening half against a side coming in fresh. We recovered to keep them scoreless in the second half, and grab a few goals but lost on a 2-3 to 5-2 scoreline.

These results did mean, however, we qualified for the Cantwell Cup final against the hosts themselves, Thurles Sarsfields. It was a strong performance in the final, eventually winning 6-7 to 3-1 and taking home the trophy. Thanks to all those who made themselves available for selection on Saturday morning for what was something different for the players, and a nice competition to be involved in. Well done to Chris Sexton and all his team for adding some more silverware to the trophy cabinet!

ALL-COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE: An absolutely huge game for our Champion Sliotars-sponsored Premier Intermediate hurlers on Monday night; as they face into their last league match of the season against Glenroe!

We have won all our league games to date, but Glenroe are also unbeaten; it's 1st vs 2nd and the winner will be promoted! (A draw would also see us getting promoted) So it acts as a League Final, against the side who we defeated in the Intermediate Championship final last October and they will be well up for this one!

We have felt that we have been stuck down in this division for too long, and we have played really well at times this season but it now all comes down to this final match against a strong Glenroe side, who we are very familiar with over the past few seasons. It is sure to be a hard-fought game and very likely to be a cracker.

It is a league final, where a draw will also do us to gain promotion, it is at home, it's a chance to secure a first piece of silverware for this team this season and achieving promotion is something that has eluded us over the past few seasons. Best of luck to all involved!

This fixture will be followed up by the semi-final of the City Championship on Wednesday July 11 where we are set to face Claughaun/Old Christians in Ballybrown.

LIMERICK SENIOR HURLERS: Congratulations to Kyle Hayes, Barry O'Connell and the Limerick senior hurlers who had a comprehensive victory over Carlow last Saturday in Dr. Cullen Park to make an All-Ireland quarter-final next weekend. Kyle hit a goal inside the opening minute to set Limerick on their way, and now they are set to face Kilkenny next weekend. The time and venue of that clash is yet to be set; keep an eye on the Team App and other social media for details regarding tickets.

LIMERICK MINOR HURLERS: Hard luck to James Mason and the Limerick minor hurlers, who were defeated in their first game of the quarter-final round robin against Galway on Sunday. They can still make the All-Ireland semi-finals if they defeat Kilkenny in their next outing.

LIMERICK U-16 HURLERS: Congratulations to Aaron O'Donovan who was in action for the Limerick U-16 hurlers at the weekend. Limerick ended up winning the shield, and Aaron was an integral part of their performance as he was top scorer of the entire competition. Well done Aaron, doing the club proud as always!

LIMERICK U-16 FOOTBALLERS: Congratulations also to Micheál Cuddihy and Ciaran Galvin who featured for the Limerick U-16 footballers in the Munster U-16 football tournament in Rathkeale at the weekend.
