Duignan, Pa

Pat Duignan, from Quay St., Drumsna, died on November 12th in Sligo Hospital following a brief illness. He was 93 years. This was only his second time to be a patient in a hospital. He had been well cared for by his daughter Mary. nine years ago, Pat's wife Anna Claire Farrell, sister of the late Paddy of Clooncolry, died. He never had the same zest for life after that. Their son Peter died in 1987. Peter and Pat are buried in Cloonmorris. Pat hailed from Crossna, Keadue. Anna Claire had been housekeeper to the local priest Fr Kelly and that is how they met. They married in 1951 and lived in Furnace, Dromod, until 1962, when they sold their shop and house and moved to Drumsna. A skilled tradesman and builder of houses, Pat worked with Leitrim Co. Council. The late Denis Dockery was one of those who worked along with him. Dominic, a son of Pat's was an excellent footballer with Annaduff. He was on Fr Manning's very successful U-14 Co. Champion team in 1964 and later played on the adult teams. Dominic worked with The Leitrim Observer and, in later years, he has a thriving taxi business in Carick. He and his wife Brigie have three daughters, Claire, Tracey and Linda. "Straight", "decent" and "very friendly" are terms I've often heard in relation to Pat Duignan. As his son Dominic said of him, "He belonged to a generation that had different and sound values. He lived a quiet, simple life in which friendship and neighbourliness were very much valued." Over the last years Pat's good neighbours Maureen Quigley and Margaret McGovern were frequent visitors and, together with Liam Costello, they brought him all the news. Our deepest sympathies to mary, to Dominic with his wife and family, to the Farrell family (builders, Dromod) and to all of his relatives, neighbours and friends. Courtesy of the Leitrim Observer.
