The late Malachy O'Rourke The death has taken place of former Aughavas and Leitrim GAA star Malachy O'Rourke who passed away in Co Meath. Originally from Corriga in Aughavas, 92-year- old Malachy O' Rourke was a member of the Leitrim Junior team that won the 1938 "Home" All- Ireland Junior Final before going to lose the overall title against London in October of that year. In 1941, Malachy formed an all- Aughavas partnership with Michael 'Red' Moran as Leitrim regained the Connacht Junior title. But their dreams of All- Ireland glory were shattered in the semi- final when Moran's leg was broken and Leitrim ended up losing to Cavan by a point. Malachy was also on the 1939 Breffni Cup team that won the Senior Championship and, with his brother, the late Felix and cousins the late Michael 'Red' Moran and James O' Rourke was part of the Aughavas County Championship winning team of 1940. In 1943, Malachy moved to Skyrne in Meath to follow his brother Felix and family but his love of Aughavas and the GAA lived on. His nephews followed his footsteps with Fergus later wearing the Green and Gold of Leitrim and Colm winning many medals for Meath Courtesy of the Leitrim Observer 22nd June 2007
