The late Peter Curran There was gloom all over Carrigallen Parish and, his native Aughavas, at the unexpected death of Mr. Peter Curran, Carrigallen Postmaster which occurred unexpectedly at his residence Corriga, Garrigallen, at the early age of 44 years. When Peter took over the running of the Corriga Post Office on the death of his father, he was the third generation of the Curran family to do so. Peter ran this very successful business until the postal authority commenced closing down country post offices. Just five year ago he purchased the Carrigallen Post Office from the Lockhart Family. He soon became very popular with all local people who thought the world of him. He was a very active with the different clubs in the parish and sold a record number of Carrigallen GAA football matches. Peter was also a star footballer on the Aughavas football team, played at corner back in the eighties and nineties and won various Intermediate Junior Championship and League medals. He was a fearless corner back and any forward who played on him knew they were after a hard game. In later years he played on the Division 5 team. He was also a great charity worker and climbed Croagh Patrick every year and was always one of the first to reach the top. He also raised money for different charities. The Carrigallen and Aughavas parishes are much poorer at the passing of this popular man. Sympathy is extended to brother Sean, Anthony, sister-in-law Helen and a large family circle. On the arrival of the remains at Saint Joseph's Church, Aughavas, there was a large guard of honour of members of the Aughavas Football Team. The removal of remains and funeral following concelebrated Mass in which Very Rev Fr Faughnan, PP, Aughavas was the chief celebrant assisted by Very Rev D Murray, PP, Carrigallen, was large and representative. Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery. Courtesy of The Leitrim Observer 22 September 2006
