Leaden, Fr. Augustine

The Late Fr Augustine Leaden Long-serving former editor of the Leitrim Guardian, Fr Augustine Leaden passed away at Garden Hill Nursing Home, Sligo on June 12. Fr Leaden is probably best remembered for his tireless work as editor to the Leitrim Guardian. He was a strong supporter of the arts, folklore and history of the region and he saw the Guardian as a way for local people to bring their stories to the rest of the community. In his youth Fr. Leaden was a prominent footballer playing at centre half back on the Ballinamore team which lost the 1950 Senior Final to Cloone. The retired parish priest was born in the townland of Drumlonan, Ballinamore. He went to school at St Patrick's, Cavan and from there went to Maynooth. He was recognised as a great classical schoolar and he later taught Greek at St Patrick's College, Cavan after ordination. Fr Leaden also served in the parished of Killinagh and Glangevlin. Fr Leaden is survived by his brother Brendan and sisters Una and Bernadette and a large extended family. He will be missed by all who knew him, his family, friends, colleagues and those who worked with him on the Leitrim Guardian. Fr Leaden's remains were removed from Nazareth House, Sligo to Killinagh church and the funeral service, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Courtesy of the Leitrim Observer June 2003
