'We had nothing to lose' - Plunkett

October 02, 2014

Aughawillan's Gary Plunkett says his team's underdog status helped them focus in last Sunday's Leitrim SFC final.

Sean Pierson's team caused one of the biggest upsets in recent county finals when they toppled red-hot favourites St Mary's by 1-13 to 1-10 in Carrick-on-Shannon, where Plunkett picked up the 'Man of the Match' award after an outstanding display.

"I can say I was on that team that broke the 20-year gap and it's an unbelievable feeling at the moment," Plunkett told the Leitrim Observer.

"When you are classed as underdogs the pressure is off and you can concentrate on your game. You have nothing to lose, just go out and give it your all.

We had nothing to lose and luckily enough it turned out in our favour."

The full-forward wasn't lost for words when describing the feeling after the full-time whistle:

"It's unbelievable when you look around and see all the old faces. It's a very proud day for everyone here and we know this is where we are going to be from now on."
