Plunkett, Jim

March 08, 2012
There is widespread regret in the Carrigallen and his native Ballinamore parishes at the death of Mr Jim Plunkett, Clooncorick, which has occurred at Tallaght Intensive Care Hospital, Dublin, following a short illness.

He was both a former club secretary and player of the Aughawillan football team who lined out at right full forward on the team that won the club's first junior championship in 1960, with whom he celebrated a 50th reunion 12 months ago.

A GAA man at heart, after he moved to Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow, his involvement continued as secretary of the Aughawillan club for 17 years. Although living away he remained a loyal club supporter who took pride in the club's numerous senior championships.

He also enjoyed another good win in winning the heart of Lily McGoohan, a local girl from Carrigallen, who assisted him at running a successful business in Bagenalstown. On the couple's retirement they and their two daughters came to live in Clooncorick, Carrigallen, where they became very popular with all the locals.

Sympathy is extended to his wife, Lily, Carrigallen; daughters Mary, Navan, Carmel, Roscommon; brothers Oliver and Pappy; sister Lily; brother-in-law; nieces, nephews and a large family circle.
A large guard of honour from his Aughawillian and Bagenalstown football teams, whose jerseys rested on the coffin, were present on the arrival of his remains to St Mary's Church, Carrigallen. A large congregation was present also for his funeral Mass which was celebrated by Rev Ultan McGoohan CC Cavan and cousin of Mrs Plunkett. Burial took place in adjoining cemetery.
