Cunningham, Michael

December 17, 2010
Michael Cunningham RIP: On Saturday, December 4, our club was plunged into mourning as news broke of the death of Michael Cunningham. Michael had been ill for most of this year, he fought his illness with great dignity and courage and he met every setback head on but that was typical of Michael. In all his years he had served the club so well at every level, he never backed down from any obstacle that was put in his way. Last year, even though he had reached the 40 mark, he played with our team that reached the semi-final of the junior A Championship.

He was also a member of the team that won the junior A Championship in 2000; in 2003 he was proud captain of the team that won the intermediate Championship. He still remains the last man in the club to captain a championship winning team.

He also lined out for the Leitrim Over 40's team and was so proud to wear the Leitrim jersey. He will be sadly missed by everyone connected to the club but our pain is nothing compared to the pain of his wife Emer and his children Rhia, Chloe, James, Ryan, Mia and Ben. We offer our heartfelt sympathy to them as well as his sisters Myra and Helen, brothers Sean and Paul, and all his relatives, friends and neighbours. The large crowds who braved the arctic weather conditions to attend his removal and funeral showed the esteem in which Michael and his family are held by all who know them. May you rest is peace Michael.
