Drumkeerin GAA club notes
August 31, 2010
Thanks
Thanks to Laurine Walpole for looking after the notes in my absence last week.
JFC Quarter Final
We had to start this week by congratulating the Junior team and their
management following their heroic win against Ballinamore in the
quarter-final of the Junior Football Championship on Saturday evening
in Aughnasheelin. It was a memorable victory against all the odds and
one that will live long in the memory of the large Drumkeerin support
that was in attendance. After losing the toss, Drumkeerin were playing
against a strong breeze in the first half however they defied normal
logic by controlling every aspect of the game. Going into the break
leading 6 points to 4 things could have been even better had we
managed to convert the numerous goal chances in the first period.
Ballinamore are a strong side and faired very well in their group.
This strength was demonstrated in the second period when they came out
and started to control proceedings racing into the lead following a
goal. However our lads didn't drop their heads and got themselves into
contention heading into the last moments of the game. Their efforts
were rewarded when Noel Flynn was pulled down in the square resulting
in a penalty. It was literally the second last kick of the game and up
stepped Daniel McSharry to bury the goal and give us a well deserved
two point victory. Final score Drumkeerin 1-9 Ballinamore 1-7. The
whole panel deserve credit for this win. There were some excellent
performances on the day. Well done to all involved as the team now
move into the semi final where they face Eslin the weekend after next.
MFC
It is a similar story with our minor team who powered into the
Championship final following a nail biting win against Leitrim Gaels
last week. Dogged with injuries the team had to work tooth and nail
for their victory and can thank Cathal McCawley for a late goal which
secured the win on a score line of 1-9 to 3-4. The team now play
Dromahaire in the final next week.
IFC Semi Final
It is a big day in the club's year as our Senior team line out in the
Intermediate Football Semi Final this Saturday against Dromahaire.
Throw-in in Drumshanbo is 4.45pm. Enough has been said about our win
in the quarter final and the team will know that performance levels
must improve ten-fold if we are to progress against a Dromahaire team
who are strong favourites heading into the game. The team have trained
hard and we wish them the best of luck.
Under 12 Girls Final
Good luck to the Under 12 girls team who have to travel all the way to
Ballinamore to take on Sean O'Heslins in the 'A' Final of the
Championship. Preparations have been going well for the team and
following their win against Dromahaire in the last round they deserve
our support. Throw-in this Saturday is at 2pm.
Ladies JFC
Best of luck to the Ladies team who begin their championship campaign
this Sunday against Cloone at 1pm. It is great to see the improvements
made from a team that only came together this year. To date I have no
details of a venue but please check local media for details.
Underage girls
Good luck to the Under 16 ladies team who are in action this Thursday
against Fenagh in the pitch. Meanwhile the Minors got the points from
their game last week.
Under 10
There is no training for Under 10s this Saturday. We have arranged a
blitz against Glencar/Manorhamilton next Tuesday. Bus leaves the pitch
at 6pm. Meanwhile Under 12s are due to be action next Monday however
this may change, players will be informed in meantime.
Table Quiz
The last of the four fundraising table quizzes took place in Davitt's
Bar on Sunday night. Winners on the night were Joe Earley, Eamon
O'Grady Snr, Emma McKenna and Laurine Walpole. Well done to the team.
Thanks to Francis Davitt, Shauna's Beauty Clinic, Emma McKenna,
Laurine Walpole, O'Grady's, Seamus Gallagher and Dolan's for
sponsoring spot prizes. Also thanks again to Gabriel Flynn for being
the expert quizmaster. The club would like to pay tribute to all those
involved in organising the events. They were great enjoyment and they
pulled in a remarkable €2,500.
Lotto
Lotto returns this Saturday. Thanks to everyone for their continued
support. The co-ordinators for September are Seamus Duignan, Eamonn
O'Grady Junior and Ciarán White.
