Leitrim strike All-Ireland gold

March 12, 2010
The county was celebrating this week after Leitrim won the All-Ireland VEC 'B' football championship.

Jason McLoughlin captained the Leitrim lads to glory at Duggan Park, Ballinasloe on Saturday March 6 - beating Limerick by 0-15 to 1-8.

Brian Mulvey, Conor Byrne, Shane Harten and John Mulligan were outstanding for Leitrim VEC, who produced a stellar all-round team display and were full value for their four-point winning margin.

It was a magnificent victory for Leitrim, who have suffered more than their fair share of heartache in this competition in the past. Afterwards, manager Jimmy Guckian saluted his players.

"I thought we were better in every position but that didn't really transpire on the scoreboard. We made hard work of it.

"I think if we didn't win it would have been a complete injustice.

"We've a very strong team there all over the park so we were confident. We had seen Limerick during the week and, while we have a good side, we were confident we could beat them and thank God we did."
