NFL 4: Hannon key in Garden win
February 14, 2010
Wicklow 1-13
Leitrim 0-9
After their narrow defeat to Clare last weekend, Mick O'Dwyer's Wicklow showed signs of their championship form from last year when they brushed aside Leitrim by seven points at Aughrim yesterday.
Tony Hannon proved the difference between the sides, kicking 1-4 over the 70 minutes to hand the visitors their second consecutive defeat and help the Garden County to their first two points in the Division Four NFL.
Leitrim has started the game brightly and were up by a point after 15 minutes thanks to some sound free-taking by Michael Foley, but the hosts laboured after that and should have had a goal when Paddy Dalton fired a shot that was superbly turned around the post by 'keeper Dermot Reynolds. It came at the expense of a '45 though, which Hannon converted and Wicklow went in at the break with a 0-6 to 0-4 lead.
Early on in the restart, both teams had kicked a point apiece when Hannon got in for an opportunist goal and after that O'Dwyer's men dominated the next ten minutes which would prove decisive, as Sean Furlong, Dalton, Brian McGrath and Leighton Glynn (2) all raised white flags that would put their team on the path to victory.
