McHugh, Bernard

May 16, 2008
There is widespread regret in Carrigallen parish and surrounding districts at the death of Mr Bernard McHugh, Sonnagh, which occurred at the General Hospital, Cavan. Bernie as he was so popularly known had been in failing health for some time. A native of Corriga, a member of a well known family, he emigrated to London while in his teens in the mid 50s. After some time he met up with local girl Josephine Battles and afterwards the couple married and were blessed with two sons. The couple were soon to return to Carrigallen and purchase a house right beside his home. His return was Carrigallen's gain. He was a great football fan and played many friendly matches with the famous McCormack football team, Killeshandra. He took a great interest in all the Carrigallen underage teams and became their trainer where he had great success in winning many games. He also took on and trained the lady footballers. This team also had much success over County Leitrim and neighbouring counties. Team names like the McCabe sisters, Gretta O'Neill, Marie O'Reilly, Williamson, Mulligan girls etc were a team to be reckoned with. He was also a first class harmonica player and was features on Radio Eireann's Ceili House on numerous occasions and won numerous awards at Fleadh Cheoileanna all over Ireland. He also played in a number of musical groups which were in great demand all over Leitrim and neighbouring counties. He certainly played a major role in his adopted parish. Sympathy is extended to his wife Josephine (Josie), sons Christopher and Noel in London, Stephen, Carrigallen, daughter Karen in Dublin, sisters Mrs. Mary Whitton, Colmcille, Mrs. Brigid Curraw, Aughnacliffe, and a large family circle. The removal of remains to St. Mary's Church, Carrigallen was large and representative. The mass was concelebrated, chief celebrant was Rev. Ultan McGoohan, C.C. Cootehall, a native of Carrigallen parish, friend of the McHugh family and Very Rev. Fr McKeown, Aughnacliffe. Burial took place to adjoining cemetery. Leitrim Observer, 16th May 2008
