Leitrim SFC: Two goals lead Glencar/Manor to title
October 06, 2008
Glencar/Manorhamilton 2-9
Bornacoola 0-7
Glencar/Manorhamilton took their first Leitrim Senior Football Championship crown in almost a decade om Sunday after defeating Bornacoola by a decisive eight points at Carrick-on-Shannon.
Goals late on in each half proved the difference for this Glencar/Manor side as they struggled to distance themselves from this fancied Bornacoola side, despite their majors.
It was the favourites who had made the better start to the game by kicking the first two points in the opening ten minutes of play, but three points in reply come the quarter hour mark paved the way to the game's turning point just before half-time.
A dropping ball into the square was met with the fist of midfielder Darren Sweeney and hit the back of the net on 27 minutes. His side then struck over two more singles before the break to assure the north Leitrim men of a 1-6 to 0-3 lead going into the resumption.
Both Mark McCloskey and David O'Connor hit quick points at the restart to cut the deficit down to four, but their side failed to strike that all important goal over the hour that would see them right back into contention for the title.
To make matters worse Bornacoola captain Michael Duignan saw red in the game's closing stages for a challenge on substitute Brian McDonald before a Dominic Kelly penalty in injury-time made sure Glencar/Manorhamilton would be taking home a first senior county title since 1999.
