Appeal delays Leitrim SFC
September 19, 2008
The Leitrim senior football championship has been plunged into chaos following the decision of the Connacht Council to refer an appeal by the Sean O'Heslin's club back to the Leitrim county board.
The Ballinamore club lodged the appeal with the provincial body against the decision of the Leitrim county board to rescind a red card issued to St. Mary's Jimmy Guckian in the sides' drawn quarter-final on August 30. The decision to refer the matter back to the county board means that the county final cannot take place as scheduled on Sunday week, September 28.
The decision leaves the senior championship up in the air with Bornacoola not knowing who they will face in the final following the postponement of last Sunday's semi-final between St. Mary's and Glencar/Manorhamilton.
Guckian won his appeal to the Leitrim CCC against a red card imposed in the drawn game and played a major role in St. Mary's subsequent 2-12 to 0-9 win over O'Heslin's in the replay.
In a statement issued on their website, the Leitrim county board said: "Following the outcome of an appeal lodged with Connacht Council GAA by Sean O'Heslin's GAA club, it was decided that the matter be referred back to Coiste Chontae Liatroma for a rehearing under rule 155n 2 and rule 158 by a differently constituted Hearings Committee.
"Due to the time constraints involved in this process, there will be no fixtures in the Masonite senior championship this weekend. Leitrim GAA will be making no further comment on the matter."
