Carrigallen GAA Notes

Aiden Harte
There was widespread sadness and regret in the parish last week at the death of the very popular Aiden Harte. Aiden had been suffering from a long term illness but nevertheless his death was greeted with great sadness as the town lost one of its great characters. Aiden played both juvenile and adult football for the club while he served us very well at committee level for many years particularly as secretary, registrar and PRO. A fervent football fan, Aiden rarely missed a match for either club or county and always gave great press to Carrigallen teams of all ages through the medium his very popular weekly notes in the Observer. Aiden was proudest when cheering on his nephews, the Harte brothers who starred in many of the clubs successes down through the years. A great character, and a generous man, Aiden will be sadly missed by all who knew him in particular the Harte family in Carrigallen. The sympathies of all in the club are extended to the Hartes at this sad time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
Junior Victory
Our junior team secured their place in next years Junior A championship with a quite fortunate one point victory over a lively Drumkeerin team in Aughnasheelin last Sunday. A good first half performance in general was spoiled by some wayward shooting. Rory Harte with 0-4 from play was our chief marksman with Raymond Reilly and Enda Madden claiming the other scores to leave us ahead by 0-6 to 0-2 at the interval. However, the second half saw a role reversal with the North Leitrim lads dominating and our whole team retreating into defence, surrendering the initiative. Just like ourselves in the first half, however, Drumkeerin threw away several scoreable opportunities while we struggled to get the ball up front. Ciaran Kelleher struck our first point of the second half in the 24th minute to bring us level after Drumkeerin had kicked five in a row to take the lead. Four minutes later Rory Harte took a pass from Terence Reynolds at top speed. As Rory was charging through the Drumkeerin defence he was cynically chopped down with a high tackle. Rory needed lengthy treatment before being allowed to continue. From the resulting free kick which dropped short, Enda Madden flicked the ball onto the crossbar but Ciaran Kelleher ghosted in from nowhere to kick the ball over the bar for what proved to be the winning score. This was a great result considering we were missing seven players from the starting line up so well done to the team and management.
Thanks to Management
The club would like to extend its appreciation to the Junior Management of Jerome Maguire, John Mc Cabe and Raymond Reilly for their efforts in taking the Junior team this season. Hopefully next season will see this team return to winning ways in league and championship.
Feast of Football
There will be a feast of football on offer next Saturday, September 13th with the Under 10 blitz taking place in the park. The action starts at 11pm and it will see seven neighbouring clubs along with ourselves as hosts taking part. There will be two pitches set up with two groups of four teams playing matches on a round robin basis. Every team will be guaranteed at least four matches and a place in a final! So come along if you're free and give the young players of tomorrow your support. Matches will commence at 11am and will run on until approximately 3pm. Good luck to all concerned.
