Laois begin search for new manager
August 15, 2008
A four-man sub-committee has been set up in Laois to oversee the process of finding a successor to Liam Kearns as football manager.
All clubs in the county have been asked to submit their nominations to the Laois county board before the August 25 deadline. The sub-committee of Brian Allen, Larry Doone, Niall Handy and Ollie Byrne will interview the candidates before making their recommendation to the county board for ratification.
Football board chairman Larry Doone said: "We'll be looking inside and outside the county.
"Rumours have been going connecting people to the job but nobody has yet been approached and nobody has been appointed. People have been mentioning the likes of Jack O'Connor and Joe Kernan but personally I think that the logistics of a manager travelling that distance would make it a non-runner.
"I feel strongly about putting in place a management team as much as a manager and if you have a candidate who is particularly strong, or weak, in one area we need to put a backroom team in place to build around that and I think it's very important to have a good combination of the skills needed to have a successful team."
Former Laois dual player Pat Roe, who recently stepped down as Offaly manager, was the first to publicly declare his interest in the vacancy earlier this week.
