Rigney staying with Laois
August 12, 2008
Niall Rigney is to continue as Laois hurling manager next year after the O'Moore County retained their Liam McCarthy Cup status by overcoming Christy Ring Cup champions Carlow last Saturday.
The Portlaoise clubman was appointed manager on an interim basis following Damien Fox's resignation in June, but revealed this week that he only agreed to take the job on the condition that he would be allowed to continue next year.
Rigney said that he will operate an 'open door' policy with an invitation to junior, intermediate and senior players to try out for the county team if they feel they are good enough.
"To be honest, nobody would have touched the job if they were offered it six weeks ago but I was only too happy to get it," he said.
"People said that I was mad but not me. I'm very passionate about my county and I was delighted to get the job and to be asked."
