Mountrath GAA goes on nationwide funding campaign

May 16, 2013
Mountrath GAA, who urgently need to raise €200,000 to drain and completely re-surface their playing pitch, have come together with Crumlin Children's Hospital, who are seeking to raise €4million by the end of the Summer to finish Crumlin's Cardiac and Cancer wards to organise a special joint fundraising effort. They've arranged a €2 TEXT competition, to win a Pedigree Simmental Heifer, donated by Celtic Sires, based near Mountrath, or a cash equivalent of €5,000.

Mountrath GAA will be organising teams of young members to distribute a target of over 100,000 leaflets promoting the TEXT competition over the Summer months at major GAA and other rural events. The winner will be announced on 29th September, following a final fundraising push at the National Ploughing Championships, which take place in Co. Laois this year.

A portion of the income will go directly to Crumlin Hospital, mainly to help finish the Cardiac and Cancer wards, but also to help fund the National Children's research centre, which has been at the heart of Paediatric research in Ireland and internationally, for over forth years. The hospital itself is the largest specialist children's hospital in the country.  In 2011 the hospital had 72,601 out patient attendances, 33,980 emergency attendances, 18,325 day cases, 9,809 in patient admissions and performed 16,373 surgical procedures. There is hardly a family in the country which has not had a relation or friend attend Crumlin, and witness the excellent services provided there.

Mountrath GAA is a vibrant local club, similar to so many throughout the country, but unfortunately has a location that is very low-lying, beside a river, and the entire playing area is now badly waterlogged. It needs drainage installed throughout the whole area at 1 metre intervals, and the whole surface must be raised 2-3 feet. The changing rooms are also badly in need of re-furbishment.

The primary prize - a valuable Pedigree Simmental Heifer, with the special name of "Celtic Dosh", has been donated by Angela & Gerard Brickley, who farm and run a small bovine semen business near Mountrath. For those without the means to maintain a Heifer, there is the option of taking an alternative cash value of €5,000.
