Phelan 'blown away' by conditions
April 18, 2013
Laurence Phelan says he never saw anything like the wind which prevailed during last night's Electric Ireland Leinster MFC first round game between Laois and Longford.
The victorious Laois manager told Midlands 103: "I've been coming to O'Moore Park for 25 years and I don't think there was ever a stronger wind. The conditions were horrendous for both teams."
Phelan admitted that he was worried at half-time when his side only led by 0-4 to 0-2 after playing with the aid of the gale.
"We got it together at half-time and I think we played some super football in the second half in terrible, terrible conditions.
"Look, we have quality in that side and it would have been a shame if we'd lost out tonight. It's the first time a Laois team has won a minor championship match in three years, so it's happy days. We're heading for a quarter-final and we don't mind who we meet."
