McCarthy says win shows Laois hurling is 'on the rise'

May 19, 2012
Laois manager Teddy McCarthy was happy with his sides performance as the O'Moore's made a winning start to Championship 2012 with victory over Carlow at Dr. Cullen Park.

The visitors led from start to finish in a game which Willie Hyland top-scored 13 points.

"As a said from day one we'll be judged on one game only and that's the game against Carlow," McCarthy said.

"One swallow doesn't make a Summer, but we can only talk about today.

"We went away for a bonding weekend in Cork a few weeks ago - a very tough weekend. The boys responded well to that weekend and they responded even better for the three or four weeks leading into the game.

"Training was of very high intensity and we worked tremendously hard.

"You could see the whole thing was coming together. The lads were a bit apprehensive coming down here, but look at the end of the day they wanted to get at Carlow.

"Carlow isn't an easy place to come and we all know they beat us twice in the last three years. It's probably one for the books today for Laois.

"It was great for Laois to do what they did today and on the back of the minors winning (against Offaly) - that's only good for Laois hurling.

"I hope now that everyone in Laois will get behind the hurlers once and for all.

"The Laois hurlers are there and we need the support. If we get the support the hurlers will respond in kind."
