O'Byrne Cup: Kingston shows no mercy to Laois

January 09, 2012
UCD 0-15
Laois 0-11

Donie Kingston returned to haunt his Laois team-mates with a match-winning performance for UCD in Crettyard.

Laois manager Justin McNulty took the opportunity to blood seven new faces, and they looked to be on course for victory when leading by 0-6 to 0-5 at the break. The students started brightly with Westmeath's Lorcan Smyth and Kingston grabbing early points, but Laois hit back with scores from Colm Kelly, Sean Ramsbottom and debutant Damien O'Connor to take a slender lead into the interval.

UCD laid the foundations for their success in the third quarter when Kingston and Smyth were both to the fore in a dominant spell that yielded six unanswered points.

The home side had to wait 19 minutes for their first score of the second period from a Kelly free, but UCD weren't to be denied.
