Bookies pay out in Laois error

July 30, 2010
A number of quick thinking pundits earned easy money on a Laois SHC match when bookmaker Paddy Power continued to offer odds on the match for a number of hours after the game in question was over.

Castletown were 1/3 on to defeat Borris-in-Ossory in a senior hurling clash last weekend and they duly lived up to their favourites tag by recording a 3-16 to 2-11 victory.

However, the odds on the match remained up until Sunday evening even though the game was played at 2pm that day and a Paddy Power spokesman revealed that there was an error made in the timing of the match.

"It was a bit of a cock-up on our behalf," said Communications Manager Ken Robertson. "We ended up paying out €2,500 on it. We took the time off the Laois GAA site early in the week and we never doubled checked it and we became aware of the situation on Sunday evening. We decided we would pay out."
