Mulcahy ineligible for ladies All-Stars

October 01, 2008
Cork's All-Ireland ladies football final heroine Valerie Mulcahy will be a notable absentee from the 2008 All-Stars team following her straight red card against Tyrone in the All-Ireland semi-final. Mulcahy, who scored a sensational 3-2 as Cork powered to their fourth consecutive All-Ireland triumph at Monaghan's expense last Sunday, withdrew an appeal against the sending off before the final and, as a result, has no further recourse to overturn Rule 266 and become eligible for an All-Star nomination. The nominations for the 2008 ladies football All-Stars will be announced in the coming weeks, with the winners being selected by a newly constituted eight-person committee, replacing the old system where each team manager submitted nominations. The committee comprises Billy Daly, Leinster president (Dublin); Peter Rice, Central Council (Wexford), Geraldine Cremer, Connacht vice-president (Leitrim); Patricia Bohan, PRO (Leitrim); Gerry Doherty, Ulster president (Armagh); Paul Swift, Ulster PRO (Monaghan); Michael Ryan, Munster president (Waterford); Dan O'Mahony, Munster vice-president (Cork).
