Walsh taking nothing for granted
September 25, 2008
Cork ladies football captain Angela Walsh is refusing to underestimate Monaghan ahead of Sunday's All-Ireland final at Croke Park.
The Rebelettes are hot favourites to complete a four-in-a-row of All-Ireland wins at the expense of a Monaghan team they beat by 19 points earlier this year, but Walsh isn't taking anything for granted.
Recalling the National League meeting of the sides, she said: "We had just come off the back of a defeat to Dublin, and we went up to play Monaghan the following week.
"We had a point to prove to ourselves that we were still able to perform at this level. I think we beat them quite well, but they have brought in a lot of younger players since then. We know it will be a tough game to win."
The Dungarvan-based schoolteacher acknowledged that having top scorer Valerie Mulcahy available after her suspension was reduced is a huge boost to Cork.
"Val has definitely been one of the star players for us over the last few years."
She added: "It's grand we are in our fourth final but we are focusing more on the 2008 season. If it happens, it happens - and hopefully it will."
