January 06, 2008
Carlow footballer began a new era in good form as they saw off Kilkenny by 13-points in this O'Byrne Cup clash in front of their home support at Dr. Cullen Park. Carlow 3-13 Kilkenny 1-6 With the lows that Carlow endured last season then a win against any opposition is certainly welcome and a home tie against Kilkenny gave Bealin the perfect opportunity to get off to a positive start. Simon Rea was in deadly accurate form as the Barrowsiders built up a 0-9 to 0-3 half time advantage, despite Rea missing a penalty during the third quarter. The goals that had threatened to come finally arrived for the home side as first Eric McCormack and then Rea firing to the Black and Amber's net. Kilkenny were not without fight and bagged a goal of their own when they won a penalty, with All-Ireland winning hurling star Eddie Brennan firing to the net for the Cats. Carlow still had time to put a gloss on the win as John Almond added a late third goal to stretch the home side's advantage.
