"That's what pisses so many people off about Davy"

Wexford manager Davy Fitzgerald with selector Seoirse Bulfin

Ger Loughnane has labelled Davy Fitzgerald's latest outburst as "absolutely ridiculous".

Responding to criticism of his sweeper system, the Wexford manager lashed out at The Sunday Game analysts Henry Shefflin and Michael Duignan and suggested that RTE should only employ pundits who have experience in management. But Loughnane - who managed Davy Fitz to two All-Irelands with Clare in 1995 and 1997 and has vast experience as both a manager and analyst - strongly disagrees:

"It's a big flaw in Davy. He does so much good and then he undoes it by indulging in this pre-planned headline-making that doesn't do him any justice whatsoever," he tells The Irish Daily Star. "He should choose his friends in the media carefully.

"Most of all, it takes from the performance of the team and the progress that has been made. This is all stage-managed, mostly by Davy himself. This is a staged event.

"I was totally deflated when I heard it and said 'Davy, why the hell do you go on like this?' I know it's not an instinctive reaction. You can see that straight away. That's what pisses so many people off about Davy. We should be talking about a very good starting point for Wexford hurling and looking to build to the future.

"It's an absolutely ridiculous assertion that somebody ought to have been a manager before they have credibility in commenting on games. Otherwise, we'd have no journalists or pundits. Punditry is totally different and separate from managing."
