Kilkenny dominance 'a bit like Groundhog Day'

Tipperary's Brendan Maher tackles James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick of Kilkenny during the 2010 All Ireland SHC final.

Former All-Ireland winning captain James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick has branded Kilkenny's hurling dominance "a little bit boring".

The Ballyhale Shamrocks man won five All-Ireland titles under Brian Cody during his playing career and will no doubt be cheering on the Cats this weekend as they bid for their county's 37th Liam McCarthy Cup.

However, he feels that his native county's dominance of the small ball game, particularly in Leinster, has become a touch boring.

"It's a little bit like Groundhog Day," Fitzpatrick told sportstalk.ie ahead of Sunday's showdown at Croke Park.

"I find it similar to Dublin winning the Leinster football final. It is a little bit boring. But it's not Kilkenny's fault. It's up to all the other teams to raise the bar.

"I don't know what the solution is; maybe scrap the Leinster championship and scrap the Munster championship and work out a Champions League format."

A two-time All Star winner, Fitzpatrick added that being an inter-county hurler definitely had its ups and downs: "Winning, being successful and coming back home to home-comings in Kilkenny and going to the All-Irelands on the big days was unbelievable, but overall it was tough. Going back to November, December I dreaded that, I hated it, but I'm grateful to have been successful."
