Soccer star Mikey Drennan is set to revive his hurling career after revealing he is battling depression.

The Shamrock Rovers striker is taking a break from soccer in order to address the issue. The Kilkenny man announced on Facebook yesterday that he's been suffering with depression for the past three years, but is hoping a return to his native city and the sport he grew up playing will help him to get his life back on track.

The 22-year-old, who was an up-and-coming hurler with James Stephens before deciding to embark on a professional soccer career with Aston Villa, Southampton, Carlisle United, Portmouth and Shamrock Rovers, said: "I've moved back to Kilkenny. I took a two-week break to get my head around things.

"I think it's the right thing for me. I will probably play a bit of hurling to keep my fitness up. It's always been a game I loved.

"I play with James Stephens club. It's been my club since I've been younger. They have been great to me as well, helping me get a job as I need to get a job. I'm unemployed now obviously and it's back to reality and working."

Shamrock Rovers released a statement saying "Mikey has the full support of all his colleagues and friends at the club; we wish him the very best and hope to see him back soon."
