Leinster MHC roundup

May 06, 2012
The Leinster MHC continued yesterday with Wexford, Kilkenny, Offaly and Carlow all registering victories.

Wexford defeated holders Dublin - who will get a second chance in the backdoor - 0-22 to 1-17 after extra-time, while Kilkenny proved too strong for Laois in Portlaoise, winning 2-17 to 0-15. Offaly were pushed all the way by Meath in Tullamore, edging home by 2-13 to 1-14, while Carlow ended Westmeath's interests for another year with an impressive 1-14 to 1-12 win in Mullingar.

The game of the day was undoubtedly in Parnell Park where Wexford recovered from a disastrous opening to shock the reigning champions. Oisin O'Rorke's third-minute goal had helped Dublin to a 1-5 to 0-1 lead by the 10th minute but the visitors fought back to trail by just three points, 0-8 to 1-8 at the break.

Dublin extended their lead on the restart, but failed to score for 24 minutes as Martin Storey's charges came storming back to take a 0-15 to 1-9 lead. But last year's beaten All-Ireland finalists battled back to draw level on 1-13 to 0-16 and force extra-time.

It continued to be tit for tat for most of the additional period before Wexford, who led by a point at the end of the first period, opened up a three-point advantage, and Dublin - who will now face Carlow - weren't able to respond this time.
