DJ's brush with death

May 03, 2012
DJ Carey's father has revealed how the Kilkenny hurling great almost died from a heart infection last week.

Carey, whose brilliant hurling career is the subject of the popular TG4 programme Laochra Gael tonight, was rushed to hospital last Tuesday week after collapsing while filling out forms at his local garda station. Tests later revealed that he had myocarditis - a viral infection of the heart - that could have taken his life.

DJ's dad John Carey told the Irish Sun: "He was struck down with a viral infection in the heart. It was very serious. He is out of hospital now but he is on medication and he is still not in the best of shape. He's had a tough time of it."

John added: "I heard talk that he had a panic attack - but that was rubbish. It was a heart infection."
