Who will join Kilkenny in All-Ireland semis?
July 06, 2010
Kilkenny are already through to the GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship semi-final on August 8 and will be joined by the winners of the Cork v Waterford Munster final in Thurles on Sunday. Meanwhile, there are two Phase 2 qualifier ties on Saturday.
The weekend line-up is as follows:
Saturday:
GAA All-Ireland SH qualifiers (Phase 2)
• Dublin v Clare, Croke Park, 4.0;
• Offaly v Limerick, Tullamore, 7.0.
Sunday:
• Munster final: Cork v Waterford, Thurles, 4.0
CORK v WATERFORD
It's their first championship meeting since 2007 but the earlier part of the decade was certainly a busy time for the rivalry as the counties clashed no fewer than nine times at Munster and All-Ireland between 2002 and 2007 with four wins each and one draw.
This will be the 58th championship meeting between the counties, with the score standing at 41-12 in Cork's favour with four draws from their previous 57 clashes. Cork are bidding to win the Munster title for the first time since 2006 while Waterford last won the title in 2007.
Their last championship clash was in 2007 when Waterford won an All-Ireland quarter-final replay by three points in Croke Park, having earlier beaten Cork in the Munster semi-final. Cork's last championship win over Waterford was in the
2006 All-Ireland semi-final.
The counties clashed in the Allianz GAA Hurling National League last March, with an exciting game ending in a draw (Waterford 2-20 Cork 3-17) in Walsh Park. Eoin Kelly scored a remarkable 1-17 (0-14 from frees, 0-1 from a '65') for Waterford while Michael Cussen (2-2) and Ben O'Connor 0-8 (0-7 from frees) were Cork's chief marksmen.
