Shefflin honoured to break record

Henry Shefflin has described breaking fellow Kilkennyman Eddie Keher's 38-year all-time hurling championship scoring record as a "marvellous honour".

The Ballyhale Shamrocks clubman posted 0-12 in last Sunday's Leinster SHC semi-final hammering of Dublin to bring his total in championship hurling to a mind-boggling 22-382. His third point in the 17th minute from a '65 pushed him ahead of Keher as hurling's most prolific scorer.

"It's a marvellous honour for me (to break the scoring record). I did not think too much about it during the week. A few people did mention it to me but my main focus was on the game," he said.

"It's wonderful to be mentioned with all those great players that are on the scoring chart. They did not get as many frees as we do in the modern game so the totals they got were phenomenal.

"I'm just delighted for myself, the family and my team-mates. Seeing as I am the free-taker I would not be up there without my team mates."

Kilkenny manager Brian Cody wasn't making a big deal of Shefflin's remarkable scoring feats.

"To be honest, I'm more concerned about what he's going to do for the rest of the year," he said.

"That's the only concern I have with Henry. Henry doesn't need me to talk about him. His past is as it is. Today on is my only concern with Henry. I'm very happy to have that concern around the place."
