Brian Cody won't consider Kilkenny players involved in next Saturday's Fitzgibbon Cup final between DCU and UL for the Cats' Allianz League clash with Tipperary the following day.

"It's a shame that the (Fitzgibbon final) weekend is clashing with a serious league weekend," the Kilkenny manager said after yesterday's win over Waterford.

"The college has to be respected and we've been looking after these lads and minding them, like everybody else as well. They are just disappointed they can't play with their county as well as the college next weekend."

Cody expects the win in Walsh Park - which was Kilkenny's first of the campaign - to give them a major boost.

"It lifts the team when you get a good win like today. If we were facing into it (next Sunday's clash with Tipperary) down three games, maybe the heads might be down a small bit," he continued.

"Generally speaking, we would be happy enough with what is going on. We have been competitive, but we needed to get points on the table. We have two more matches to play agianst very serious teams, but this was a good display and a good win."
