McGeeney not getting carried away

July 21, 2008
Kieran McGeeney was keeping his feet firmly on the ground after his Kildare team snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Cavan in their All-Ireland qualifier clash at Newbridge. James Kavanagh's 72nd minute goal gave the Lilywhites a dramatic late victory and helped erase some of the disappointment of the shock Leinster SFC defeat to Wicklow two months ago. "While pleased with the result, McGeeney was unhappy that Kildare had needed to pull it out of the fire in such dramatic circumstances. He said: "I just felt that we didn't need it. We played good enough football to be further enough ahead. "During the league, five of the seven games were one-point games and for four of them we were the wrong side of them so it was nice to see that they showed they would keep on working regardless of what happens, there's always a chance. "In fairness to Mick Foley, it was a fantastic run and a great finish from James Kavanagh. I'm disappointed that we needed that, but not disappointed that we got it." He added: "Cavan have good players - Seanie Johnston, Dermot McCabe, Ronan Flanagan, Mark McKeever. They don't always show the ability they have but they've top quality players and I know because I've run after most of them."
